Kath and Kim come to BBC2
Top-rated Australian sitcom Kath and Kim is finally coming to terrestrial TV in the UK.
The BBC has brought the rights to the acclaimed suburban comedy, which will form part of BBC2’s autumn line-up from September.
The show has already been aired on cable channels FTN and Living, but the new deal will mean a much bigger audience for the underplayed comedy and broad Australian catchphrases which have made it such a hit in its own country.
The corporation's head of comedy entertainment, Jon Plowman, told reporters in Sydney: "It is a big, broad comedy and it is different."
"Comedy continually has to find new jokes, find new characters and funny settings, find new things to say and therefore I think Kath and Kim will do well because it is not like anything else we are making at the moment."
And he said that he saw no problems in the show about a proud lower-middle-class Melbourne mother living with her lovelorn daughter translating to UK audiences
"The audience aren't stupid," Plowman said. “They know that they are watching something that doesn't stem entirely from their culture."
