New channel for US sitcoms

American sitcoms are to get a new outlet in Britain, with the launch of a UK channel from the ABC network.

ABC1, which will be available on Freeview from September 27, will be the first time the Disney-owned channel has operated outside the US.

And included in its comedy schedules are the Nineties Tim Allen (pictured) vehicle Home Improvement the much-praised, but short-lived sitcom Sports Night, The Geena Davis Show and 8 Simple Rules. Drama will also form part of its line-up.

ABC1 will initially broadcast from 6am to 6pm, and ABC is also looking for digital satellite and cable outlets.

There will be no advertisements during the first few months, although slots will be sold later.

Disney executive John Hardie said: "The launch of the ABC brand signals the Walt Disney Company's long-term commitment to the UK. All day long, ABC1 will provide the daytime viewer with well-written, high-quality entertainment.”
