New comics have been invited to audition for one of the most-established talent hunts in London.

Previous winners of the Hackney Empire New Act of The Year include Harry Hill, Ronnie Ancona, Ardal O'Hanlon, Linda Smith and Men in Coats (pictured)

Auditions for the 2004 awards start in January, at the newly refurbished Victorian music hall.

The final, on February 28, will be hosted by Arthur Smith, and a selection from the final bill will be invited to play at next year's Edinburgh Fringe.

Entrants should have at least two years experience and will need a 5-minute set. Organisers say the are especially looking for variety acts such as speciality or musical comedians.
