Comic Janice Connolly is to appear on Coronation Street - playing Peter Kay's mum.

The comedian, who plays the circuit as Mrs Barbara Nice, will take the role of Dolly Garside.

Kay will play a bungling romeo in two episodes of the long-running soap, next year.

He plays Eric, a brewery drayman who falls for Rovers landlady Shelley Unwin - and takes her on a disastrous date.

This is not the first time Connolly has worked with Kay; she appeared in Phoenix Nights as Holy Mary.
