A very good sign

Hancock's autograph makes £420

Tony Hancock's signature has been sold for £420.

The autograph sold for more than twice its expected value at an aution of showbiz memorabilia today.

Collected in 1952, the signature was mounted with a picture of the comedian when it was sold by London auctioneers Cooper Owen.

The price was more than that reached by the autographs of three Goons put together.

Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan and Harry Secombe's signarues raised £200.

The auction attracted most attention for its collection of Star Wars items, blueprints of the Millennium Falcon selling for £2,200.

However other comedy stars's autographs also went under the hammer:

  • Tony Hancock - £420
  • Will Hay - £260 (with other actors from his 1939 film Where's That Fire?)
  • Stan Lauren - £220 (at the foot of a typewritten letter)
  • Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis - £160
  • The Goons - £200
  • Harold Lloyd - £100
  • Fawlty Towers cast - £85

Meanwhile, online auction house e-bay, had the following at the time of writing -

  • Lee Evans - £5.50
  • Michael Barrymore - £2.99
  • Jethro - £1.20
