League rapped over language

Television watchdogs have slammed The League Of Gentlemen for using the word "mongs" as a term of abuse.

But, in a ruling with heightened relevance amid the Brass Eye furore, it has been cleared of making light of paedophilia.

Four viewers complained after taking offence at the word during the Christmas special.

The BBC said the word might have been expected in the "surreal and visceral tastelessness" of Royston Vasey.

But watchdogs decided it "exceeded acceptable boundaries " as it derived from disability, and upheld the complaints.

The other complaint about sexual innuendo and trivialisation of child abuse was not upheld. Commissioners felt it would not have offended most viewers, who know what to expect of the show.
