Comic denies abuse

Ordered to keep away from kids

America comic Paula Poundstone has pleaded not guity to charges of lewd conduct with children.

At her arraignment hearing yesterday, Santa Monica Superior Court ordered the 41-year-old comic to keep away from the alleged victims, and told her she can only be near other children when their parent or guardian is around.

The orders, as requested by the prosecution, are normal in such cases.

Supporters had gathered outside the courthouse with signs reading "We Love You Paula".

Poundstone is now due back in court on July 30, when a date will be set for her preliminary hearing.

She faces three charges of lewd conduct with a girl under 14, and another of child endangerment involving two boys and two girls.

The incidents - which carry a maximum 13-year sentence - are alleged to have happened on May 19, June 5 and June 6.

Poundstone was once named best female stand-up in the American Comedy Awards.

She had her own, short-lived TV show in 1993, and provided some of the voices for the Hercules cartoon series.
