Mitch Fatal Is Magical

DVD review by Steve Bennett

Let's talk about sex… As that’s pretty much all American comic Mitch Fatel does. This DVD, out now in the UK, is 65 minutes, but just the one track. Nothing distracts him from his favourite subject.

His set list is a methodical run-down of every aspect, so he’ll start with a premise, say ‘breasts are fun’, then talk about the function of breasts, size of breasts, nipples, inverted nipples, then playing with nipples… and so on. There is no variation, so your enjoyment will depend entirely on your appetite for this narrow diet.

He manages to avoid making it boorish, though, by adopting a childishly whiney – or possibly mentally challenged – delivery and by constantly being in awe of women. This offers him a naivity, even a sentimentality, that softens the blow; as every sexual encounter is treated as an exciting adventure. Though he’s 42, he looks forward to an orgy like a seven-year-old looks forward to a birthday party, and will often snigger breathlessly as he describes some fresh treat he’s discovered.

The observations keep coming at a fair old lick, but the writing is a mixed bag. He can often be quite pedestrian, as if mention of oral sex or handjobs is enough in itself – even though these are some of the most covered subjects in comedy. Yet sometimes he will surprise with a nicely expressed thought; such as suggesting a woman pushing her knickers to one side is like a bouncer unhooking the velvet rope to a VIP area.

It’s basically a solid, middle-of-the-road, three-star offering; possibly a bit more if you have a particular penchant for the comedy of sexual observations – but no great revelation.
