Tim Vine Chat Show

His brother Jeremy has interviewed Prime Ministers, Hollywood stars and royalty, but tonight Tim Vine’s guest on his talk show is… an employee relations manager with a facility provisions company. Ooooh.
The simple twist of the punmeister’s chat show is that he draws his guests from the great unwashed in his audience. And the fact that this chosen subject has a job that’s not obvious to define isn’t going to put Vine off. As you would expect, his guests are largely just ciphers for his cheesy vaudevillian gags. He has such an encyclopaedic knowledge that just about every career triggers a small flurry of corny-one-lines.
It’s an interesting way to exploit his immense back catalogue, as well as prompt some apparently spontaneous quips. Many of his more classic lines have become so well-known among his core fans that he has to acknowledge the fact – even going as far as getting the audience to chime in with the punchlines.
read more of this review …
That’s not to say there’s no interaction with the guests, which starts off as compere-level banter, but with the time to go into a little more depth. Unlike ‘real’ chat shows, success here is not wholly dependent on the quality of the guests, but on Vine’s wit. But when the interviewees are funny, it’s definitely a bonus, as tonight proved.
It’s not always obvious who will provide the best laughs: discovering a genuine roller-coaster salesman to open the show is amusing enough, with his tale of a ride gone wrong, but the stand-out is the teacher who chastises him with a terrifyingly disciplinarian air that makes Anne Robinson look like Fearne Cotton, forcing Vine’s wordplay to yield to roleplay for just a few moments.
Yet no one can compete with the hilarious story from the teenage lad recalling his decision of a few years back to conduct vital scientific research into how many M&M’s he could stuff up his nostrils. ‘And then I passed out…’ is only the start of his horrors.
Vine keeps things bowling along nicely, with his quick wit and compulsion to keep things cheery. When our employee relations guy turns out to be a hardnosed salary negotiator, who cockily asserts that he knows the union will accept the reduced offer he’s given them, there’s a murmur of disapproval. But Vine moves on quickly before the mood can sour. The real world has no place in his primary-coloured comic-book universe.
His strong streak of self-deprecation feeds into this mood, with catchphrases to celebrate when things go awry, quips about the dodgy quality of the gags, and tongue-in-cheek asides to the audience, threatening them with a long night ahead.
Aside from an opening set by comedy magician John Archer, a similar purveyor of ‘dad jokes’ to accompany his nifty tricks, the chat show section is bookended by Classic Vine. There's an overwhelming onslaught of mixed-ability cornballs batter down the defences to start, and a small selection of wilfully naff songs to end, complete with audience participation. Some of these abandon his usual punchline-driven approach for simply being bizarre, especially the peculiar ladder-based ditty that ends the night on a baffling note.
His fans, most likely, would be happy with an evening of these usual shenanigans undiluted by the interviews, but fair play to Vine for wanting to mix things up a bit. But if this is the future of talk show, Michael Parkinson better prepare to get very dizzy once he’s in the grave.

Absolutely brilliant. Along with Lee Mack. Tim's the best of the best.Closely followed by Tom Stade. Highly Recommended.
John Venters - 15/09/2011
I was picked out the audience as a guest with Brian May . It's my new claim to fame. Tim Vine was brilliant.
Richard - 18/08/2011
Saw the Chat Show at Edinburgh. Tim was brilliant but the format involving members of the audience was disappointing. Really didn't want to see a lot of egotistical prats making fools of themselves. Prefer the one man routine although it must be harder work
Cali - 10/05/2011
Saw him in Stoke, poor man's Tommy Cooper without the talent. Waste of an evening.
Chris - 10/04/2011
Second time we've seen him (last night, Wakefield Theatre Royal), second time I've pulled a muscle from laughing.rnrnHis support act's still crap though...
Ben - 21/11/2010
One of the finest comedians of our age. Up there with Stewart Francis, Jack Dee and Lee Mack. Truly brilliant.
Caroline,Snorbens,2010 - 04/03/2010
Thank you for making me laugh
Ian Bradburn - 19/02/2010
Saw him in High Wycombe, absolutely superb, I was in hysterics the whole night.
Tim Saint - 17/02/2010
I took my friends sons to their first comedy show to see Tim Vine. They were amazed. I love his comedy anyway and thought his "Jokamotive contained some of his best material yet with very few weak gags. Cant wait for the next show.
Ripley - 09/02/2010
Have to be honest and say I would have rather gone almost anywhere than to see Tim Vine in Halifax last Saturday night but I must admit he was brilliant. I didn't expect it to be such fun. I'm totally converted. Loved him.
Tony Cowards - 19/09/2009
The Guv'nor of Gags, simply the best joke teller in the country and, probably, the world! I truly pity anyone who can watch Tim Vine and not laugh, my favourite act on the circuit.
Al - Birmingham - 03/01/2009
Simply the best stand up in the country. Tim Vine is non-stop funny!
Ian Terval - 12/09/2008
One more dummy and I would have died laughing... awesome
David - 19/08/2008
Me and my 16-year-old son went to see Tim at the Edinburgh Fringe last week at his prompting. I really enjoyed it - it was great -a surreal machine gun delivery of a great range of puns, silly one liners, good props, absurd songs all delivered with superb comic timing. It was good old fashioned humour with a nod to Tommy Cooper - Tim often broke into a bit of a TC impersonation as he piled the jokes on just pausing long enough to wait for the laughter to abate so he could send the next one off into the audience. The guy in front of me was wetting himself and it was a real treat just to put reality and worldly concerns on hold for an entertaining hour and a half and just indulge the naive silliness of youth before the adult sensibilities took over. I admired not only his timing but also his spot on delivery - I think he only messed up one line and he recovered beautifully - the guy is in total control of his material and his audience and even when the mike went down towards the end it almost seemed to be part of his act. It was traditional British humour at its silly, end of the pier show, best. Let's bring more of that back- the world needs a lot more daftness and silliness!
Not chasing butterflies. - 24/05/2008
I wasted a few hours of my life, plus my hard earned money to see this muppet in Derby. In one word - terrible. The chasing butterflies dance will forever be scorched into my memory. Complete utter crap - the kind of jokes 10 year olds would not laugh at. There is nothing worse than watching a 'pretend' comic 'pretending' to be hilarious - while people quietly gasp and cringe their way through your act. Ghastly.
Billy - 24/05/2008
Saw him in Colchester and he was absolutely superb! He can cock up and turn it into a completely separate joke in itself. I went in hoping to remember as many jokes as I could, but he told so many I can only remember two or three. Highly recommended for a quality night out.
Lee Moore - 19/11/2007
Hilarious
Adam Montgomery - 04/09/2007
Genius. Buy DVD. See live. Then do it again
Karl - 08/03/2007
Relentless, absurd, diverse and surreal. Great use of props and a grade 'A' mixture of superb and awful one liners. I enjoyed every minute!
Rob - 28/01/2007
Tim Vine is ace! Saw his most recent tour and was it was brilliant, can't wait for his next DVD to come out
Jo Phelan - 25/10/2006
Extremely funny. I've never seen lines fluffed so expertly. We'd definitely recommend his show.
Guy Pettit - 05/10/2006
Nothing short of a comical genius. He just needs the big break and the following he deserves. I vote for more gigs in the South East!
Matt Watts - 28/09/2006
Pure genius... had Judy Finnigan wetting herself when appearing on her show. Surely a fantastic comedy gauge.
Evs - 29/06/2006
If you love puns, and i do, this is the finest exponent there has ever been. He has turned punnery into high art and at times a sport. Will go down as a comedy icon, as he will keep being discovered by comedy fans throughout his life though.
Tony Thick - 30/05/2006
Have seen the DVD loads of times, funniest thing I have ever seen. Saw him live in Winchester in Feb, can't remember any of his gags I think you need to see him a few times for them to sink in. Tim Vine is a genius.
Cherzo - 30/03/2006
Absolutely brilliant, you cant stop laughing all the way through
Arran - 27/02/2006
The best stand-up comedy act I have ever seen.
Martin Abrahart - 20/02/2006
This guy really has has taken stand up to a new level. If you think that Tommy Cooper on speed would be funny, go and see this guy he's hilarious. Tim you rock...
Christopher Howarth - 06/02/2006
I laughed so much I thought I was going to die. I missed several jokes just trying to get my breath. Fantastic
Chris eskett - 14/10/2005
I watched Tim in Sutton Coldfield and boy did he have us eating out of his hand! A modern day Tommy Cooper
Alan - 17/09/2005
Tim is the only comedian I've ever watched where me and the rest of the audience are walking out with sore lungs from laughing too much. This isn't about observations on yogurt, on growing up, on building a shed or about the comedian's tragic past: Tim is about making you laugh while he genuinely enjoys seeing people laugh. The single press quote that appears on the poster says it all "Onslaught". He certainly conquered Edinburgh, this year
Darren - 16/09/2005
Had Tim's DVD since Christmas and must have seen it four times. I know the jokes are coming but I still can't stop myself laughing. Absolutely fantastic.
Paul Hamer - 23/08/2005
Thirty years ago, Tim would have been prime time TV, and should be now.
Jack - 20/07/2005
An absolute treasure. What a jem
Mike Granger - 08/07/2005
This man is the funniest comedian I have seen live in Edinburgh! His TV and the Minotaur was hilarious. Why is not TV on TV more often?
Ben - 23/05/2005
A war of attrition, and he won
- 09/05/2005
Absolute legend, funniest guy on the circuit
Alan Lunt - 02/05/2005
Lowry: 2/5/05 What a night, didnt stop laughing from start to finish, after viewing the DVD i thought it was unfathomable that he could craft a new hour of jokes but he proved me very wrong , the ultimate pun gun
Mel Wilson - 25/04/2005
Truly superb live show! Lost his way a couple of times but this made the whole event funnier. Will be using as many of these jokes as I can at work for the next few years, trouble is, there's so many of them, its hard to remember any
Jip - 24/04/2005
I still ached the day from laughing so hard. Pure genius.
Ian Burnip - 22/04/2005
I have never laughed so hard in my life. He seemed a bit annoyed by the end because he made a couple of mistakes, but, when you are trying to remember that many jokes Tim, it is going to happen. Also the audience stopped laughing, but that's because (well in my case) i couldn't any more, i almost died of laughter. He was funny throughout apart from a really c*ap song at the end. Other than that, classic.
Dennis Davis - 19/04/2005
Tim is world class and everything he has done has been excellent
Johnny P - 14/04/2005
Legend! Someone tole me Tommy Cooper was dead! More like he has changed skin and got thin and blond.
Grahma Hyde - 01/04/2005
He is definitely a spoder. I have loved him since Whittle and his DVD is a masterpiece. It does not matter how basic it is, if it is funny then its stands up against anything. Truly world class and I loved the Sketch Show, too.
Russ - 01/04/2005
The man is a genius. The point is he knows he's cheesy and he rolls with it; He is the Abba of comedy
Keith smith - 21/03/2005
Tim Vine is the new king of comedy above all comedians of all catagories. You have to watch the DVD at least 3 times to catch it all. Never has a DVD been so worth the money. Blink and you miss some gags. Best comedy ever
Kenny - 20/03/2005
Horribly, horribly unfunny. I was hoping the brain-dead puns were just an opener, but no... they went on for a further painful 20 minutes. Please, make it stop
Frances Fogbound - 16/03/2005
Saw TV in Harlow - new routine, first time out, even when he lost his way, he kept going! 1.5 hours on stage, 98% new material. You either like his style or loathe it. Needs more TV exposure.
Katy - 07/03/2005
Saw Tim last night and his current tour is well worth seeing - all new material and very very funny as always.
Marcus Hand - 16/02/2005
Tim Vine is best viewed in 10-minute segments. Yes, his gags are very contrived. Yes, they are Christmas cracker standard. But the skilled delivery and enthusiasm coupled with genuinely witty ad libbing add up to a mesmerising few minutes of quick fire jokes and uninterupted laughter. Seen him twice live, on the telly a few times, and watched the DVD. Heard most of the jokes before but they're still funny.
Tim Stone - 02/02/2005
I find most things funny, and I did like his humor when he was on Whittle, butI felt physically sick as he completely died on stage. poor sod. Hes really a less inventive, slightly more embarrassing version of Harry Hill.
Claire Greenhead - 28/01/2005
I can appreciate that Tim's style of comedy wouldn't appeal to everyone, but I love it! Quick, quirky - the kind of man who you love to see, but couldn't bear to live with if he was the same at home. My kind of comedian.
Ibrahim - 26/01/2005
Brilliant. My wife and I saw him in Battersea and can't stop telling people about him - and the jokes are clean. Even better than Tony Blackurn!
Funny Bone - 25/01/2005
The Guinness world record for jokes: The man's a genius! Women want him and men want to be him. Heck, even my 10 year old son practices his routine in front of the mirror, and boy does he do it a treat. Taking age-old jokes and recycling them into a pristine performance of toddler humour, all crammed into the shortest space of time imaginable.
Richard Davis - 25/01/2005
I was brought the DVD for Christmas, and gottta say ... wow! What an excellent bit of work Tim's cooked up this time, since his day's on the superlative sketch show to 1,000 jokes. His comic juxtipastion reminds me of a young Jim Davidson. In short a real corker.
Squee - 23/01/2005
Absolutely fabulous. Had me and my mates in stitches from start to finish.
Nik - 21/01/2005
This guy may tell some old and some bad jokes...but he has a talent to tell them in such a way that you can't help but laugh.
Adam - 18/01/2005
Watched his DVD and I can't help but think anyone with a good enough memory and a "1,000 crap joke boke" could do his routine. If you've got the sense of humour of a seven-year-old he might appeal, if not steer clear.
