London gets a new comedy club

Another venture in the Comedy Store's old home

A new comedy club is opening in the former central London home of the Comedy Store.

London’s Live Comedy will run at least three nights a week at 28a Leicester Square, the basement venue occupied by the Comedy Store between 1985, after it moved from its original strip club home, and 1993.

More latterly the venue was the Storm Nightclub, which was home to a regular 99 Club night for around a decade until it closed in September 2106.

However, the site is to reopen from March 2, with comedy early evening before turning into London’s Luxury Club – with the same LLC initials – from 11pm.

The opening month will feature Sara Pascoe, Tez Ilyas, Tiff Stevenson, Kerry Godliman, Paul Sinha, Geoff Norcott and many more.

It will also feature regular nights starting with Sara Pascoe’s Literary Salon, Keith Farnan’s Irish Comedy Party, Thom Tuck’s Thom Foolery, Ben Van Der Velde’s Classic Joke Club, Amy Howerska’s Experimentia and an LGBT night curated by Elf Lyons.

The new venue is being programmed by comedian Tiernan Douieb, pictured, who has also curated The Phoenix Fringe in central London.

He said: ‘It’s always exciting for there to be a new comedy venue, but somewhere that puts care, attention and investment to building a community of comedy fans and comedians, and actively aims to be the most diverse, kick ass room in the country or world? Yes please.’

The kitchen at the venue will be run by BBC Masterchef Professionals finalist Matt Healy.
