Original Review:
The Australian stereotype is of a sport-and-barbie loving bloke, with a ‘no worries’ attitude to life. Well, Steve Hughes doesn’t do stereotypes, so don’t expect him to conform to one. He’s a man with some major worries about the world, and he doesn’t hold back on sharing them. He’s a self-avowed conspiracy theorist espousing routines that betray an anarchist undercurrent - but don’t let that put you off. His die-hard scepticism about religion, war, politics and the corporate machine is such stuff as great comedy is made on – and Hughes ensures that the gags always take their place along the sermonising. In fact, it’s the very levity of the underlying message that gives his best lines their punch.
Although he puts most the Aussie stereotypes into the blender, ex-rock musician Hughes is distinctly laid-back, with a laconic delivery that belies the serious thinking that’s gone into the set – both in the intelligent arguments and the elegant gags he crafts to back them up. This is no ranty polemic, but a sober, softly spoken attempt to turn an audience around to his way of thinking by sardonic wit rather than furious rage.
He doesn’t see the world like most people – the authors of pamphlets about the global industrial-military complex aside – and that gives him a unique point of view for his gags. The fact he then nails them so perfectly is down to his sizeable talents as both a writer and a performer.
It’s a challenging set, but in a good way. It makes you think, but it also makes you laugh – and heartily, at that. Date of review: Jun 2007

I can honestly say he is the funniest comedian I have ever seen.I laughed,I cried, until I couldnt laugh or cry any more. A genius with a relaxed 'Steve Hughes' interpretation of the world we live in. It was therapy more than a stand up show... It was brilliant.
Douglas Thomson - 15/04/2012
Steve at the Ironworks Inverness 24th March: This relaxed Aussie entertained the audience with his brand of Hippy Zen philosophy with a matter of fact Antipodean approach that had an affinity with a proportion of the audience. As time goes on, Steve's material will evolve and move on from his political/corporate business jibes that seem to jar with his ideology. He's a natural comedian who can make fun of any subject matter that is a rare gift. Look forward to where his comedy content takes him?
Nic - 16/02/2012
Saw Steve last night in Cardiff and laughed my pants off as did everyone else around me. Yes the material was a little Hicks-y BUT if you're gonna do a little cribbing, then do it from the best :)
Cd - 16/02/2012
Funny when not ramming his own personal politics down people's throats. If you are so anti capitalist, can I have my money back?
sean - 11/02/2012
Saw steve last night at Doncaster Dome, absolutely side splitting, cheek bones aching with laughing. met him outside afterwords and he had the time and patience to speak with everyone, 10/10 top night.

On looking through these comments, it's hilarious how many people accuse Steve Hughes of being racist. I don't pick any of that up from his material in the slightest. As most of those accusations come from women (and their boyfriends no doubt), I'd say these people are being just a little over-sensitive. The guy is a comedian. Do you understand that concept? Do you perhaps need it in braille or large font before you understand that comedians are not supposed to be taken seriously / literally? The whole point of comedy is to leave your brain at the door & actually attempt to add some humour into your sad existence.rnrnSteve Hughes is a great comedian. Some idiots may like to point out that he's overdosed on Bill Hicks material, but at the end of the day, NOTHING is original, EVERYTHING is Xerox somewhere down the line, just with a slightly different slant. So don't think you're impressing anyone into thinking you're above average intelligence by trying to 'expose' Steve as a mere tribute act. He is a genuinely funny guy with his own unique views on life. If you're offended by that, then hell slap it into you...

I had the privilege of seeing Steve Hughes last night at Komedia in Brighton, and bloody good he was too, top bloke, and Komedia a good venue, well done to all.
Richy C - 27/07/2010
First time seeing Steve at the comedy carnival last night and he didn't disappoint, a lot better than most of the bland nonsense that passes for comedy these days. Well done sir, yourself and mister Wool had me in stitches.
Christine - 23/06/2010
It seems from reading the comments as though this man is a bit like Marmite. He seems like a child who has just discovered an obscene word and is desperate to shout it at every one he meets. Some of the comments he makes during his "jokes" are actually quite perceptive but if he is, as he claims, so clever why does he not have a larger vocabularly to describe things? Is he as angry as this all the time? Will he be found in a few years time drinking on some pavement somewhere shouting at passers-by. Who knows! If he really can't stand anything to do with modern life I suggest a cave somewhere would be good for him where he drink from a stream and hunt animals for food and clothing.
Namothy - 29/05/2010
Port Talbot. May 2010. Preachy left wing nonsense and badly articulated vitriol. Speaks to his audience as if they're as stupid as he thinks they are and feels that those who oppose his views or simply do not find him funny (as I did, I actually share his political stance) are idiots who simply do not comprehend his base and depressing anti-corporation sermon with some swear words in an Aussie accent. Genius. Hmmm.
Lowestoft,suffolk - 13/10/2009
Great comedian especially the joke about people being offensive!
Michael Monkhouse - 26/03/2008
A bizarre twenty minutes, and thoroughly enjoyable too. Thank God someone still has the suss to stand up there and say exactly what he thinks - and get the room laughing itself stupid in the process.
Danny Howard - 18/02/2008
I saw him at Up The Creek - funniest man of the night by far.
Barry - 26/12/2007
I saw Steve at the birmingham glee last week for my works do. i'd never heard of him before, but the jokes made my evening. Loved the bit about Greggs the bakery - so bloody funny! I hate cold sausage rolls too! Well done mate.
Rors - 17/05/2007
I've never read such a load of vitriolic nonsense as the people who accuse Steve Hughes of the various negative attributes that have been thrown at him on this site. If anyone is uninformed, it has to be the people who throw the said negative comments - eg 'knee-jerk' and 'vicious racism' etc at him; so who's being the knee-jerk here? As Steve says: "The idea of multiculturalism is meaningless, when there is in reality only one culture: ‘People’. Wise up.
Paddy Bramwells - 11/05/2007
Before calling some one a moron [below] perhaps you should try listening just a little bit harder to what he is saying. To have so completely missed the point of what Steve Hughes is saying is quite astonishing. Perhaps you reacted and then stopped listening to anything but your own opinion of what he must have been saying. He actually points out that he doesn't hate Americans in his set, but that is beside the point, he shouldn't need to. It is good to question the motives of comedians that are trying to make a statement but maybe see that comedian more than once before you make up your mind. Oh, and another thing. He really is very funny.
GMarchy - 04/05/2007
I saw Steve last night in some grotty pub in the student end of the City and thought he was excellent. Never really gone to see live stand up, although I have watched it on TV before, and I honestly thought that this guy was as good as I've seen. He managed to a put humourous spin on every topical news item and he had a real way about him. Wehn he walks on, you wonder what the hell he is going to talk about but he soons wins you over with his charm, intelligence and undoubted wit. Hate Americans? no, just theit ridiculous government! Don't we all
Maria Jonas - 21/04/2007
Well... where do you start with lovable, cuddly, inteligent, genuine, amusing, mature and tolerant Steve Hughes? Urmm let me think ... ah yes! By describing him as the opposite. Steve is just plain nasty, ascerbic, irritating, preachy, immature, hateful, knee jerk, cheap and not very bright. Added to that his fake left wing views hide a vicious racism. Racism, as we all know is born out of fear and ignorance. So Steve should really stop preaching his hate and learn a little about what he's talking about. You never know... he might find he's got nothing useful to say. What a relief that would be to the rest of us
Rich Batsford - 17/04/2007
Steve was superb at the Glee the other day - effortlessly covering lots of big topics with insight and real humour - for my money one of the real big hitters on the circuit today. Rich Xx
Conny - 02/02/2007
Saw Steve in Cardiff last night and thought he was absolutely fantastic and very much funny-clever rather than funny crude. Some intellect and knowledge of current events is required in order to get some of his joked but I loved that. I really really enjoyed his show and would definetely go and see him again.
Ben Cartwright - 08/01/2007
Saw Steve at York on Jnauray 7. He is far too slow in his delivery and seemed to spend more time lighting his fag and drinking than making us laugh. Too many pauses before any gags so it didn't flow. Very few really funny gags in his act. Probably the worst comedian I've seen at the club. I would definitely not pay to see him again. Avoid!
Carl Donnelly - 14/12/2006
Having watched Steve a number of times and recently had the pleasure of gigging with him, I genuinely think he is one of the best comics currently working on the UK circuit. The people accusing him of simplifying the world's problems into 'White' and 'Brown' or being anti-semitic seem to have missed the underlying message in his material that underneath it all, we're all the same (even the Jews!). He is one of the few comedians that can even make people who disagree with his politics and beliefs laugh at his material simply because aside from the politics it is still just funny which at the end of the day is all that matters.
Alex - 12/11/2006
Must have seen him about 15 times now - definitely one of, if not the best performers I've seen and there aren't many I haven't seen. It doesn't matter what your politics are, he's very funny. All this crap about Jew- hating and Anti-Americanism, just listen to the set, how many times does he have to say he doesn't hate the American people, just the government...and Jew-hating wtf? Go see him.
staffo - 27/10/2006
Steve is a Jew hating, American hating idiot who simplifies the world into his racist construct using inflammatory language such as “whites” and “brown people” to separate the world. Steve buys into conspiracy theory and jokes you’d expect to hear from 14-year-old socialists. If you’re a right thinking individual or hold any grasp of sanity avoid this moron at all costs.
ryan - 13/10/2006
Steve used to play drums for Austrialian thrash metal legends Slaughter Lord. His band was amazing and his comedy is the same.
Helen - 18/09/2006
One thing I think Steve would certainly preach is the right to reply and posting comments like the ones below on a site where there is understandably little room for debate or informative discussion is both unhelpful and inflamitory. Please stop.
Charles - 11/09/2006
Steve, represents the sick side of comedy, which is a reflection of his own self-hatred. What amazes me it really touches a soft spot for his audience. He preaches Jew-hatred, anti-Americanism and represents the Left in his political philosophy, but, mentions nothing about Islamofacism, honor killings, throat slitting, suicide bombers and murders of 9/11. Steve is just a self-defacing ass-kisser, whose cherices his macabre feelings which emanates as being comedy. The guy is sick
Caglar Gurkan - 29/08/2006
I saw him at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh last week. His comedy is for people who have brains as well as enjoy laughing.
O'Hara - 29/08/2006
Thought Steve was the highlight of our experience at Edinburgh Fringe. His comedy is intelligent, challenging and thought provoking. We spent the rest of the night alternating between discussing his views and laughing at his jokes
Gareth Edwards - 20/08/2006
Excellent in Kilkenny and excellent in Edinburgh as ever - yes, he is anti-war and hypocrisy and at no point do I think he has ever been anti-semitic - he has a go at war mongers of all creeds, political views and races and in a hugely funny way. Go and see him and he will make you think AND make you laugh buckets.
Nikki McLennan - 19/08/2006
Saw Steve for the first time in the Phat Cave at this year's Edinburgh festival . He came on last and was hilarious! I would love to see him again.
D Hill - 16/08/2006
Obviously a very sick man. Very sad what we in our Western culture are producing.
Michaela - 15/08/2006
He is the Adolph Hitler of comedy. About as funny as watching a rabbit die slowly in a trap.
Mac - 26/06/2006
Just saw him in The Comedy Club at Cuba in Galway, excellent. Can't recommend him highly enough, funny and intelligent. Unlike most comedians he treats you like you've done the evolution and can think on occasion. Keep it up mate
Greg - 27/05/2006
Fantastic! Like Bill Hicks with Iron Maiden references but without the class hatred and whiff of misogyny. We need insightful comedy like this more than ever.
Iain Gethin - 06/05/2006
I saw him in Cardiff last night t the Glee Club. He started OK but bored the pants off of everyone who wasn't bladdered by lecturing on politics rather than telling jokes. I thought he was also hypocritical becasue on the one hand he was preaching about how wrong the killing of inoccent people in the war was, then finishing off by condoning drink driving which also kills loads of inoccent people... So if he was gonna preach he should have at least been consistant.
Leigh - 21/02/2006
Saw him in Brighton recently where he seemed happy enough to talk about how much he hates politics rather than make the audience laugh. Having said this, he recovered his set and won everyone over by the end of his set. Very good jokes and a very intelligent man
Jamie - 28/11/2005
Excellent. One of the best.
- 23/11/2005
Hilariously funny, common ense stand up at its best.
BC - 15/11/2005
Just brilliant. Pure comedy gold.
Andrea - 03/11/2005
I saw this guy at Edinburgh and can't recommend him enough. My companions prefer not to think when being entertained, so they had mixed reactions, but as an intelligent person, I found his set the best thing at the festival
Gareth Edwards - 01/09/2005
A superb entertainer and so funny - dont miss.
Judi - 24/08/2005
I saw Steve at Political Animal at the Fringe and he was dreadful. He kept drifting away from the jokes into existentialist crap about God. More like Thought for the Day than comedy. His delivery also gives the feel of a man who thinks he is SO much cleverer than his audience. Not so,Steve.
TV - 22/08/2005
I saw Steve at Edinburgh, top notch, so good I watched him twice in one night. If you're a heckler, have a go at him, cos I like to see hecklers twatted
Maz - 03/05/2005
He was absolutely brilliant, really funny I could not stop laughing.
Dave Howarth - 18/02/2005
Saw him at the Comedy Store last night - was the only act who could keep the drunks in the 2nd row quiet. Absolutely hilarious as well and really polished and professional.
Lozza - 13/02/2005
Gorgeous, smart, relaxed, even did the dirty stuff really well by being so charming. Right on without being right on.
Anna Morell - 08/02/2005
A dark, biting, angry, truthful, rock-n-roll, wild-eyed, sweetly surreal Australian stand-up. Steve Hughes is roll-in-the-aisles funny. Grossly under-rated, but thank jiminy, over here. See him.
Andrew Sands - 22/10/2004
He was absolutely hysterical. The funniest stand up I have ever seen. Intelligent at times but not preaching. Can't wait to see him again.
Joe - 12/10/2004
He borrows from Bill Hicks a bit, but that didn't bother me because at least he borrowed the good bits. This man is a very funny fucker indeed
Angelo - 11/10/2004
Nearly died laughing. By far the funniest standup I've seen in the past couple of years.
CM - 21/05/2004
This guy is absolutely brilliant. He has that acute sense of the ridiculous which makes the best comedians. Really hilarious but thought-provoking stuff.
CX - 10/12/2003
His style is unique as well as his material. His natural charisma makes a real pleasure to see.
- 22/10/2003
That's my boy
JC - 26/07/2003
A very laid-back performance, he does it with so much ease. A very good performer.
Rachael Allen - 20/07/2003
Completely unable to handle drunken hecklers - a real shame I didn't get to see his 'comic genius' as he stormed off stage in a huff ten minutes into his act.
SL - 10/05/2003
Absolutely fantastic, really top notch stuff. A must
Lee M - 18/11/2002
Very laid back and seriously funny, I'd definately like to see him again.
Jim J - 11/10/2002
Very funny guy
Paul Sinha - 27/09/2002
Saw Steve recently , without doubt one of the really in-form comics right now.Top stuff.
Jacqui M - 09/04/2002
There's amusing, and then there's side-splitting funny that has you going back for more. Hughes is excellent!
Natalie - 30/01/2002
Hail Steve! He rocks.
Boothby Graffoe - 23/01/2002
Very, very attractive man
Matt Harris - 22/01/2002
Well, studying all those Bill Hicks videos has obviously paid off for him.
Chrissy - 19/01/2002
A comedian completely at ease on the stage. Steve is a must-see and is going from strength to strength.A good all rounder, who'll get any audience laughing.
