Original Review:
Simon Munnery is one of those acts who is often called a ‘comedians’ comedian’, such is the original way he pushes at the boundaries of stand-up. But that tag would do him an injustice, given it can be shorthand for an act who’s elitist and inaccessible, able only to entertain his colleagues, but not the audience. He can, should the mood take him, go down that path, sacrificing laughs for experimentation - but when he wants to be, Munnery is as funny as it gets – and all the more so for not taking the obvious route.
He’s adopted various guises over the years – the Security Guard, Alan Parker Urban Warrior, The League Against Tedium; all defined by a fierce intelligence, uncompromising attitude, and ability to perfectly phrase brilliantly original ideas.
As the humourless guard, he deadpans dry one-liners much smarter than they seem; as the aimless, angry anarchist he subtly subverts adolescent rebellion by proclaiming he wants to smash the system and replace it, vaguely with ‘something better’; while the League of Tedium is a unsettling, contemptuous madman, deluded about his omnipotent authority and the barking the deranged orders and meaningless slogans of the despot.
While all these characters still make appearances from time to time, he is nowadays most often to be found performing as himself, abandoning those various masks and talking about his real life and new-found fatherhood.
This is looser than his earlier work, but still notable for the vivid descriptions and Mensa-smart punchlines that pepper his anecdotes. He may, too, perform one of his poems – with or without harmonica accompaniment – that make perfect use of his beat-perfect delivery.
Munnery makes good use of the rhythms of comedy, but more importantly he can muster an impressive stage presence. Whether it’s Parker’s expert rhetoric holding the audience in rapt attention at every turn, or the ominous but ridiculous League exercising his monstrous ego, the performance adds strength to already great material.
He’s formed his own niche market on the circuit now, performing only where he wants – which often means festivals or special nights where his unique brand of comedy is most likely to be welcome. Any serious fan of comedy should know his work. Date of review: Feb 2007

Never heard of him before but heard his "Alan Parker's 59 minutes of truth" on Radio 7 and it was hilarious.
Dave Rotweiler - 21/11/2008
Desperately desperate. Should be working as a tax inspector or something as equally banal.
Michael Monkhouse - 17/07/2008
A comedian's comedian indeed. Not in the sense of being a snide cliquey gag-mongerer, more in the sense of being one of the funniest guys I've seen! He falls into character, slides into stand-up, lays into hecklers - and all the time shows comics how it's done. And shows the rest of us a good, solid, laughter-filled set.
Cardiff Guy - 19/02/2008
Same with the students at my local Uni, although to be fair they were wasted and the opener had been Russell Howard, God knows how that happened. With Munnery headlining, the £4 entry price was incredibly good value.

Very good. Too clever for the audience at the courtyard in Hereford, though
Ed O\'Meara - 27/02/2007
An exceptional comic.
bobby - 11/10/2006
My favorite! Inspired, Intelligent, honest, silly and brave work. Always exhilarating. a comedian of heroic proportion.
Lisa - 30/08/2006
Not very funnery.
Fagin - 04/01/2006
The most truly original comedian I've ever seen. Erudite, curious and very, very funny.
Si - 12/03/2005
Munnery is a definite class act, very original and highly intelligent material. Superb.
Dan Garbutt - 14/10/2004
Alan Parker Urban Warrior was and still is a great act. League Against Tedium was absolute bobbins. Surreal and intelligent comedy isn't about alienating most the audience in my humble opinion .
Ally Dickson - 27/11/2003
Saw his performance of The True Confessions of Sherlock Holmes last night and it was one of the funniest and most inspired things I've seen and heard, not to mention unique for a show in a comedy-club environment. More monologues! It's also exciting that Munnery has got several shows on-the-go at once, although I wish that the fabulous Alan Parker character was given some new material... having said that, the old jokes are still hilarious.
Kitten - 06/11/2003
Randomness at its best.
Elliott Tiney - 03/10/2003
Munnery is great. but his Sherlock Holmes show is rubbish.
John Newton - 18/04/2003
Awesome, a top act
Pete Minns - 03/03/2003
Self-conscious intellectual bilge. Metropolitan-oriented trendo-nerdfest.
Spider - 12/02/2003
This man is a comedy genius.
Liz Hugh - 25/01/2003
Brilliant!
Karen - 21/01/2003
"Anyone from anywhere? Anyone do anything for a living?" He's wonderful: Subversive, Intelligent, and (usually) surrounded by quality acts. Don't go and see him if you're stupid
Danny Hurst - 05/09/2002
One of the best!
Alexandra Smith - 19/05/2002
Well I think Attention Scum is the greatest programme ever. Even though I'm only 15 I find it hilarious. Plus Simon's cute. Even the piano playing thing is so funny.
Jonathan Dolan - 19/01/2002
The League is phenomenal. Two of the most brilliant comic minds in British comedy surely must be Simon Munnery and Christopher Morris. I too met him after some gigs in Liverpool and Manchester, he's a thoroughly nice guy and it's a shame that BBC2 decided not to recomission Attention Scum.
Alaric Dynevor - 17/01/2002
Simon Munnery is a beautiful comedian, it is not up for debate.
Chris Dymond - 30/11/-0001
I saw Simon Munnery (briefly) at the Komedia in Brighton last Sunday and he totally bombed! Five seconds into his act some girl near the front shouted 'Bollocks!' and he never recovered from that, never properly got back to his act, lost control completely, abused the audience and then seemed to shrink into himself, apologised and walked off after less than 20 minutes. It was the most unprofessional thing I've ever seen. He was great the night before at the Komedia though. A fantastic, brutally honest show, in my view. Skif 10.07.03

I will always have a fond memory of Alan Parker Urban Warrior paying off a young girl at the comedy tent at Glastonbury. The money was to make her leave, and this caused him most mental tortue - whether it was the right thing to do. Boothby Graffoe, moments later, accidently kicked same girl in the head. I don't remember it being an accident. Oh, yes, and Munnery is a God. Boothby Graffoe 17.01.05
