Rufus Hound at Latitude 2010
Rufus Hound has to be extra-careful at a family-friendly festival such as this, issuing an unequivocal warning early in his set that even though he stars in a kids’ TV show, the ensuing performance is wholly unsuitable for youngsters, however broad-minded the parents. The fact he’s had his face painted probably isn’t helping his argument, though.
‘The thing is,’ says the star of CBBC’s Hounded, ‘I quite like working on children’s TV, and the only way can continue to do that is if no one complains. I know what happens to Jonathan Ross.’
Initially, parents may wonder what the fuss is about, as Hound describes how men communicate through the all-purpose clarion call ‘way-hay’ before launching into his atheist arguments, which may follow a very familiar train of thought but are given emphasis by his slow and deliberate, Stewart Lee-style repetition of the key phrases.

Sticking to the theme of ‘things Professor Richard Dawkins knows quite a lot about about’, Hound moves on to evolutionary biology. But all this is in support of his powerful panacea; the answer to all mankind’s troubles for which there is a strong evolutionary drive: more blow jobs. That’s why the kids were asked to leave the tent as he drives home the message time and time again, sometimes quite graphically.
It’s a routine he admits was forged in the heat of rowdy gigs full of stags and office parties, more than something designed for the genteel Latitude comedy tent. But the repetition that is the joke, more than the actual words he says, still has the audience transfixed. It isn’t what you say, it’s the way you say it…

Rufus headlined Patrick Monahan and John Fothergill. They were excellent. Rufus seemed to be in a really bad mood with the audience. Not at all what I expected. Seemed to want an argument . Shame others were great. March 2012

I had the unfortunate experience of seeing Rufus Hound. You would get more laughs by watching an autopsy. How on earth can a deluded plank like this call himself a comedian?

What a waste of time it was seeing Rufus! A mate told me to come to it and said I would love his style! I didnt and my mate was cheesed off as well! What a waste of a evening! I feel robbed!

Wish I had read these comments before wasting my time staying for his headline rant yesterday. Fortunately the other acts were actually really good, enough said perhaps? I wondered if he was I'll or something was struggling through the evening, hence he forgot to include any funny bits in his dreary opinionated monolog. Turns out he treated us to the same act as Brighton! Don't waste your time and money, go for a curry instead!!!!

Komedia, Brighton..... Thank goodness Rufus Hound had been preceded by 2 very funny comedians else the audience would have been demanding a refund. I can't imagine Komedia were very impressed by him either. He was so bad - that I'm even taking time out to write a review. I'm not sure whether he had any material planned? The atmosphere in the club during his performance was, to put it politely, low - people were even commenting on the street. He needs to lose his arrogance, and construct some material that people find funny else he'll be exiting the public eye as quickly as he appeared.

Saw Rufus last night at the late show in Komedia (Brighton). What a complete waste of time that was. He was the last of the three comedians & made it fairly obvious he didn't want to be there. Didn't appear to have any sort of material prepared, so resorted to using one of the preceeding comedian's stuff, which ended up as a seriously offensive rant. When he'd milked that for all it was worth, he blatantly ran out of material & got booed off stage. Aside from making for quite uncomfortable viewing, his whole act was a complete waste of the audience's sat evening & hard earned cash - clearly only in it for the money. I seriously hope i never see him again!

By the sounds of it he is a good MC, but hideously boring if you have to listen to him talk about sucking cock for 30 minutes then basically ditching the jokes and talking about how depressing life is. I've seen him twice now and the material was as bad the second time. Thank god his support acts were good.

Saw Rufus at Just the Tonic in Leicester Square, a funny guy but went off the rails a bit perhaps to get some shock laughs, overall disappointing

Saw him at Comedy festival as the compere. I would have found a 4 hour session at the dentist having root canal more enjoyable. He spent 10 minutes asking some tw*t banker what he did and making the audience guess what company. simply bl**dy awful.

Saw Rufus at the Brighton Komedia. He has to be one of the best MCs in the business. He's got natural charm, big stage presence, lots of energy and great ad-libs. Nice one Rufus

Went to Twisters in Bournemouth just to see this guy. Train fare was worth it. Has to be one of the best MCs I've seen. Great at getting an audience on his side and manages to turn run-of-the-mill everyday situations into really funny gags.

I saw this guy at the Covent Garden Comedy club a couple of weekends ago and without doubt, it was the funniest live stand up I have ever seen. No only is the guy's material faultless, his ability to think on his feet puts every improv show I've ever seen to shame! Best comic around at the moment.

I saw Rufus as a compee for the same night twice in a row (two weeks apart) and though some of his material was the same, a fact which he acknowledged at the beginning, he also came out with lots of new material. One of the most energetic performers with but a hint of Simon Pegg in his act.

I've seen Rufus perform many times now and think he's fantastic. Not only that but he's a genuinely great guy. I'd have his babies if he asked me to.

It's refreshing to witness a comedian who, despite his obvious talent, has humility and is not obsessed with fame. Unfortunately for Hound this probably means he'll achieve it.
