Ricky Gervais
Date Of Birth: 25/06/1961
A late entrant to the world of comedy, Gervais only started to try to tap his talent for making people laugh in 1998, at the age of 36.
Before that, he had spent seven years spent as an entertainments manager for a student union.
And his initial ambitions were musical, playing in a failed Eighties band called Seona Dancing.
He later, briefly, managed the band Suede, before landing a job on London's XFM radio station where he started developing a taste for comedy, and a character called Seedy Boss who would later become The Office's David Brent.

Ricky Gervais: Science on tour

Movies are keeping Ricky Gervais busy these days; yet somewhere between the promotional junkets for The Invention Of Lying and writing and directing Cemetery Junction, he’s found the time to troll round the country on a stand-up tour.
However, he doesn’t seem to have quite found the time to polish off the writing. This show is substantially the same as a work-in-progress show he performed in London back in April, but there’s little evidence of the work actually having progressed, with straightforward routines offering plenty to enjoy, but few surprises.
It’s still a pretty funny 70 minutes, as you’d expect from a comic of Gervais’s talent, but Science feels like he’s treading water. Given that he’s such a perfectionist on his screen work, he seems happy to settle for the adequate, rather than the excellent, on stage.
read more of this review …
His shows rarely have much to do with their titles, and Science is probably the most tenuously named yet, as he’s the first to admit. Reading the first paragraph of the Wikipedia entry for ‘science’ is as deep as it gets, unless you count the debunking of the Noah myth or the homophobic prejudices of the religious Right as striking a stand for rationality over superstition.
But we start – after an hilariously inappropriate video by gifted American stand-up Louis CK – with Britain’s Got Talent, and Gervais questioning what qualifications Amanda Holden has to sit in judgment, save for breaking up with Gervais’s old Extras guest star, Les Dennis. It’s graphically gross but forensically pedantic, repeating the points with subtle shifts in emphasis, heavily influenced by Stewart Lee’s style, but made more accessible.
A couple of other comedians are channelled over the night, too, recycling Russell Brand’s famous line about heroin being ‘a bit morish’ and offering a selfish take on the charity Christmas gifts that relies on a very familiar attitude, though the gags are Gervais’s own.
This is why the show never really flies, it sounds too much like a club set that other people could – and in some cases have - done. His extended deconstruction of Noah’s Ark, as told through a kids’ book, for example, is a ridiculously easy target. That doesn’t mean it can’t be funny – and in the early stages this proudly atheist routine is – but the sarcastic comments run out of steam before the legend does. Likewise a rant against fatties is both enjoyably vicious and largely predictable, while the inherent stupidity of opposing gay marriage is nicely encapsulated, but quickly degenerates into descriptions of increasingly depraved sexual activities, using shock as a substitute for surprise.
But taste always takes a holiday when Gervais is on stage. He’s far from PC, and if it’s behind a cloak of irony, it’s sometimes hard to see. An extended routine about an obsessed at the front of a Ken Dodd routine is ruthlessly offensive about someone who’s clearly a troubled woman – especially given Dodd’s well-publicised troubles with a mentally ill stalker. While many of Gervais’s comments are as funny as they are unkind, they are far from guilt-free.
His delivery, as always, is of the cheeky child – saying the latest rude thing he’s heard in the knowledge it will provoke a reaction from the grown-ups, then trying to act all coy when it does. His favourite stance is to jut his face towards the audience – making him almost look as if he’s wearing a cheap cardboard cut-out mask of himself - and pull a fax-innocent ‘what did I say?’ shrug. The fact his voice cracks into a high, vivacious laugh is something of a giveaway, though.
The engaging tongue-in-cheek performance helps ensure this is a fun night. Yes, he does mention his Golden Globes, of course, but rather more cheesily, he’s selling his autographs for £10 a pop at the merchandise stall. Poor chap, must be down on his fortune – that, or keen to avoid the dweeby autograph-hunters that’s another of his bugbears.
An entertaining hour and a bit, yes, but falling short of a memorable one. Maybe Gervais is spreading himself just a little too thin.

This man is a fraud! In fact I am reminded of the story of the Emperor's new clothes. Sooner or later some little boy or influential critic will get up in the audience and slag him off and everyone will stop laughing with him because they think it's cool and that they should. Instead they will see him for what he is - naked and devoid of any humour and talent whatsoever!
Roberto - 08/04/2011
When he eventually gives Richard Herring his comedy persona back I might forgive him - not likely to be soon as Gervais recycled most of Christ On A Bike on his Inside the Actor's Studio' Appearance.
Lee Saunders - 29/04/2010
Science was very disappointing, relies on shock humour too much and not even funny jokes, stick to telly Ricky
Delboy - 11/12/2009
Very disappointed with the Science set. Recycled jokes designed to provoke nervous laughter. Remember when you were funny Rick? I remember listening to how proud of The Office you were. Rightly so, but you can't be proud of this. Get back to writing with Smerch.
Dan - 24/10/2009
Everyone I know who likes Ricky Gervais doesn't like comedy, they watch the office as if it is the only sitcom in the world, and tell me i don't understand when i say that he is just not funny. I've seen Ed Byrne, Jimmy Carr, Frankie Boyle and even Reg D Hunter in the last year as well as Ricky Gervais and i was laughing almost for all of there routines...except Ricky Gervais. For those of you that say he is a breath of fresh air against political correctness, i saw watch proper stand ups like Jimmy Carr and Frankie Boyle, the do cross the line sometimes but are funny, instead of crossing the line for the sake of crossing the line. The only episode of the Simpsons I have never seen more than once, the one he wrote. When people say he is Britian's best comedian, well it makes me feel glad I'm at least mostly Irish.
Jenavive - 13/01/2009
Deeply deeply untalented, unfunny man
Louise Hinton - 13/11/2008
Terrible live show Fame. £30 for 40 minutes too big for his boots!
Richard - 11/08/2008
He tells jokes about Stephen Hawking. Coming from someone that thought Joey Deacon was the BBC's gift for light entertainment, I think it's superb that we've finally got someone that's both offensive and funny at the same time. The fact that he's also managed to conquer Britain and America with his comedy suggests that I'm not alone on this one. He's a guilty pleasure, as all the best pleasures are.
Billy - 26/05/2008
The Office is alright but I can't see why it is viewed as being the 'most original comedy ever'. Programmes like The Day Today were doing this sort of thing half a decade before The Office came along, but because the concept was stretched out to half an hour people seem to have heralded it as the best thing since sliced bread.
clever trevor - 22/05/2008
All you people who dont find RG comical - are you serious? He is genuinely funny ,happy and comedic. He is the epitome of self deprecation
Paul - 30/10/2007
He has produced some brilliant stuff no doubt. But his world does have a feeling of cruelty about it. There were times when I felt sorry for David Brent.
Natasha - 28/10/2007
Fantastic stand up. Genius sitcoms. Amazing podcasts. It is a shame that some people don't understand his satirical comedy, but just as he said himself, he doesn't want those people to find him funny.
David - 16/10/2007
There are David Brent characters in all parts of the world; the difference is Gervais takes them too seriously and decides it's OK to laugh at them. This is where his comedy fails to win everyone over. He might have appeared in films in Hollywood but surely that just demonstrates how little Hollywood understands or cares about comedy; they'll just run with the herd.
rob - 08/10/2007
It's shocking to see that some muppets are unable to see the true genius of Ricky, his comedy is refreshing from the same old jokes that other comics churn out. He has found a level of comedy that sits above some people's interlect and sadly their understanding. He provokes thought and images that we try to ignore in ourselves yet we cant get away from. Don't like him? then you don't understand him.
Graeme - 19/09/2007
Saw Fame last night (tickets bought for girlfriend's birthday). Possibly the worst £34+bf I've ever spent. Just not a funny show, no real thread, and just random stories. "What about global warming, eh?" Yeah, real smooth. "Then Karl said this..." - why not just get Karl to do a show instead? Was looking at my watch after 15 minutes. Couldn't wait for it to be over and was disappointed when he came back for an encore after 70 mins of drudgery. General mood on the tube home was of similar feelings of "erm... what was that all about?". Stick to sitcoms, you're a decent TV actor but the stand-up is terrible.
Duncan - 11/07/2007
I am sorry to say this guy is just not funny. While I do admit that The Office has some clever observations, his stand-up routine is outdated and his overstated ego ruins any good material that that does manage to slip through. As for the episode of the Simpsons he wrote, yikes. Please leave us alone Gervais and take a long hard look at your material.
Hellfirehound - 06/07/2007
Have I missed all the hype surrounding RG and The Office? I find neither particularly funny and I'll laugh at anything. Painfully untalented and even more painful to watch. I did laugh at him once - when he failed to win a comedy award in 2006.
Carlo - 16/03/2007
How refreshing it is to read the comments of others who really see Gervais for what he is - a complete incompetent and non-event when it comes to comedy. Reading over the last few comments makes me feel so good. Obviously out there are other REAL people who can see the complete shallowness and transparency of Gervais and his so called 'humour'. I am glad to see that the realisation is spreading that this person should be held up for what he is - an arrogant and inconsequential little man who has no conception whatsoever of what comedy is about and indeed no place on the British comedy scene.
Peter Aleksin - 25/02/2007
His comedy is very much in the same vein as Jim Davidson. Unfortunately JD has ben blacklisted and RG has not. Why??!!!
Mark - 08/02/2007
I saw him last night in Oxford and he was hillarious, worth it and I hope to see more and more of him in the next few years. The Office was genius and Extras was a fantastic second show
Joanne Godfrey - 06/02/2007
I am just completely exasperated at how this man has become part of our British comedy institution and is now deemed to be a "great British export". I am truly embarrassed for anyone abroad to think that us Brits think he is anything special. Just so not funny. Why does anyone think that "being embarrassed" for someone is amusing? David Brent dancing? Not funny... Extras? Not funny (but some of the appearances by REAL comedy geniuses do save the episodes from time to time). When will people see the light and realise that HE IS NOT FUNNY!! Even in interviews he is not clever, witty or quick enough to make anyone laugh - a true comedy genius is always at his best in a spontaneous interview...
Matt - 02/02/2007
Saw Ricky Gervais at the WSPA gig last month and I have to say that he needs to refresh his standup material. Having seen him at the TCT benefit much earlier in the year, I was expecting to see a new bit - but he rolled out the same act, almost word-for-word! Not cool. I'm going to give Fame a miss as I don't want to spend good money when he's not really working for it!
Danny - 22/01/2007
Rick is one of the funniest men in the world. So what if he's got a big ego and talks about himself, he can because he's funny! He's a working genius.
Paul - 22/01/2007
It made our night seeing Ricky at the WSPA benefit last night. His lack of political correctness is refreshing and he deserves the credit he has been awarded
elinor - 21/01/2007
Deeply deeply untalented, unfunny man
Carlo - 28/12/2006
The Britsih sense of humour really does become more bizarre as time passes. Having deliberately watched Gervais over the last five years, I have yet to raise a smile let alone a laugh at any of his so called "comedy". It is so very sad to see how the UK public react to Ricky Gervais; a man who has no sense of comedy or humour and yet has a huge following of people who somehow think that the man is actually funny. Gervais is truly a vacuous and unfunny little man who needs some good lessons in comedy and the art of humour
Luke - 12/09/2006
Ricky Gervais is the funniest person ever! Fact. His observations are top class and anyone that doesn't think he is a genius needs to have another look at The Office. The way he portrays everyone's boss is spot on. It's an incredible in depth observation of a character that we all know and love to hate in life. His stand up is quality too. Again if you dont think this man is a genius then I urge you to watch Politics and listen to what Gervais has to say about Humpty Dumpty. Brilliant. Gervas's humour is original and at times so subtle, this is maybe the reason why people sometimes dont get it. I cant wait for the new series of Extras.
Edward - 10/09/2006
He is just not funny full stop. People have forgotten how to judge things. Go back... Look at it again... Oh its a piece of poo. repeat to yourself 'its a piece of poo' the fact that he is listed along such comedy masterminds as David Jason, Ronnie Barker and other such greats just sickens me to the core. Unfortunately its the moronity that decides what is good and bad in today's society and im saddened to think that some turely great unknowns are being held back just to make room for Ricky Gervais. He has made me laugh a few times but then again most people I know have made me laugh at some point does that mean they are comic geniuses?
Ross - 09/09/2006
Always a pleasure
Elki - 23/07/2006
Ricky's projection of the egotistical Brent is an example of the bores we see everyday - bravo Ricky for upstanding the wankers in the workplace; bravo for showing the drones what they really look like.
James - 10/07/2006
He isn't funny, I honestly do not see why other people find him funny. The episode of the Simpsons he wrote was one of the worst ever, and after sitting through an episode of The Office my sister was watching I only even smiled once.
Sharron - 20/06/2006
Ricky Gervais is in no way shape or form a comedy genuis. If creating a series that simply induces embarassment is classed as comedy then so be it. The Office was truly horrendous and dont even let me get started on his stand up work.
Deloford - 12/06/2006
If you are devoutly religious, disabled, homo-sexual, easily offended or all 4 you will probably not enjoy Ricky Gervais stand-up. If you are able to step back and enjoy the satire you'll love it. Personally I rate his Animals sketch on "the garden of eden" as one of the funniest I have ever heard; logic vs spirtuality & mysticysm (probably partly derived from the XFM character Karl Pilkington) with a touch of politically incorrect childish humour thrown in. Love it all
Simon Sheppard - 26/05/2006
He's a legend and has me in stiches every time I watch 'The Office' 'Extras' 'Animals' or 'Politics.' Never get bored of him and never will. Both series of his podcast show were brilliant. Absolute genius. Looking forward to 'Science'
Daniel Gray - 18/05/2006
No. At first I just didn't like him, then he milked a stupid dance routine that wasn't funny in the first place for so long I'm truly sick of him. Occasionally I might not scowl watching him - but that's as good as he gets.
Grog - 01/05/2006
Good example of a comedian who isn't really funny, but who observes things accurately. He is to the comedian's art what reality TV is to the filmmaker's. The sort of people whose highest dramatic ideal is Big Brother love him. Those with a couple of brain cells to rub together can hopefully see a bit further.
James Phillips - 30/04/2006
Biggest hype about nothing ever! After seeing Politics...how many jokes has this man blatantly ripped off? I don't know how he gets away with it. Maybe its because the majority of his fans have very little grasp of anyone else who has done/does stand up. He has changed nothing, people have been doing funnier jokes about the Bible, animals, etc for years and just because he's "it" at the moment does not make him the saviour of British comedy. I've said it before and I'll say it again, one hit wonder.
Dimitri Porkachov - 19/04/2006
How hard to you have to try to be a snivelling, irritating, unfunny, overweight moron if you actually are a snivelling, irritating unfunny overweight moron? To see this man interviewed, merely highlights his limitations within a comedic capacity. He giggles like a school boy at every question asked of him and is quite simply devoid of any respectable person. Personally looking forward to a brighter future for all of us where this tepid, one-trick pony quits the comedy scene and takes up a career as pearl diver in lead swimwear.
Julie - 11/04/2006
I'm a fan of Ricky's work, but why must I hear him slating British comedy all the time. Has he forgotten this is where he made his name? He is a fantastic writer, but he is NOT the only one! Why doesn't he support our original homegrown comedy more. He's always ranting on about how brilliant and daring US sitcoms are.Has he not seen The Mighty Boosh, or The League Of Gentlemen or Snuffbox. If the US is so bloody good at coming up with original stuff why did they have to do their own version of The Office? I think British comedy gets to much bad press, stop watching My Family and My Hero and look for the real stuff.
Chris - 07/04/2006
Gervais is not an actor. He is a man that finds things very very funny. You can see that from the extras on the Politics dvd. The Office and Extras are hilarious as they make us feel nervous and embarrased: and what is the natural instinct when you are nervous and embarrased? To laugh.
George - 29/03/2006
I saw Ricky at the Royal Albert Hall at the Teenage Cancer Trust gig and he was great. Having been somewhat dissapointed with Extras, I was much more impressed with his live work. Whilst his jokes were not as well observed as others, his stage presence was excellent.
James - 27/03/2006
Ricky Gervais is the Einstein of comedy. British comedy had been dead for years, just going through the motions. I never watched anything that the BBC would vomit up and call 'comedy'. What Gervais & Merchant did with The Office was not only create a brilliant piece of observational comedy but re-designed the face of British comedy. Since The Office was made there have been numerous copies put on our screens (the Smoking Room to name but one). His stand-up is not only funny but allows us to see how ridiculous our compulsion for political correctness has become. His humour is of a knowing nature and I truly believe if he has or had offended someone he would be apologise and mean it (a rare thing with today's celebrities). As for his radio show, sure I can see that some people would not totally get it and be offended by its content but I see Ricky as the UK's Howard Stern. It's his job to push the barrier and in my book that's no bad thing. There is plenty more great stuff to come form Mr. Gervais and Co. And I for one can not wait to see what he does next.
Micky Mudfface - 11/03/2006
Ricky Gervais is not a genius, unfortunately we seem to be suffering from a misguided 'emperor's new clothes' situation. If enough people say he's funny then he actually becomes funny. If you appreciate great comedy Seinfeld, Curb your Enthusiasm etc then The Office and Extras are dim examples of comedy writing... Most of the script in Extras is a rip off situations in Curb Your Enthusiasm, the man is just not funny. If you have seen his so called stand-up routine you'll appreciate this mans main aim is to earn cash in an opportunistic way... Politics - doesn't feature any material about politics (moron) Animals is just poor very poor. Flanimals is a rubbish blatant example of marketing... and I'm tired of hearing him spout on about how many Hollywood deals he's turned down... methinks he doth protest too much
Stephen - 05/03/2006
Look around you. If you don't know a David Brent, then he is YOU. Similarly if you don't "get" Ricky Gervais, then you are the ones he is taking the piss out of. The unintentional racism episode of Extras with Samuel L Jackson was a classic English comedy of bowel-clenching awkwardness. Easily as funny as any Fawlty or Norman Stanley Fletcher, RG effortlessly and cruelly exposes the English disease, institutionalised hypocrisy, self-deprecation and our arrogance with acutely observed flair
Ben - 03/03/2006
I have to say that I am amazed by some of these comments. To say that Gervais "truly has no understanding of satire, pathos, timing or even humour itself" is so clearly untrue. The Office was full of pathos, superb comic timing and a great deal of humour; sought from a place that most current and past sitcoms have failed to visit. His comic acting in The Office was also some of the best I've seen. Extras has not quite lived up to The Office, but it still delivered. The Les Dennis episode was genius. In my opinion he's jointly responsible for one of the best pieces of television in the early part of this century.
Colin Jackson - 20/02/2006
Couldn't stand The Office, loved Extras, loved the stand-up, so it just goes to show you can't please everybody. I also loved his archived radio shows on XFM and the recent Guardian podcasts (though the whole Ricky and Steve verbally beat up Karl routine is getting a bit old now). I don't really understand why people don't find him funny - maybe his personality is a love it or hate it type?
Carlo - 10/02/2006
Gervais is a complete cretin when it comes to comedy. He truly has no understanding of satire, pathos, timing or even humour itself. All he knows is arrogance. The Guardian and the BBC are totally deceiving you, and one day you will realise this: Gervais and his pathetic group deserve nothing but distain. The Office was the most awful television ever ...the biggest yawn, and one of the most unfunny and pointless things ever televised.
Adam - 07/02/2006
Ricky Gervais is by fat the funniest man i have ever seen, even though Extras was a little disappointing it would of been very hard to top The Office because it was just so amazingly brilliant. As for his stand-up i cannot see how people don't find it funny, it's pure genius! No one i have seen has taken the bible and made a joke of it! Can't wait to see his next stand up.
Chris - 25/01/2006
He has completely changed the face of British comedy - and changed it for the better. The more I watch Extras the better it gets - it makes me laugh so much I feel sick.
James Phillips - 18/01/2006
Loved The Office, but abhor the man otherwise. He has one talent, and that was David Brent. Now that's over, he's just milking his fame. I doubt in tenmaybe even five years people will look back on Gervais and say he was a real comedian. Very ordinary routine and a very unlikeable persona.
Foxey - 11/01/2006
Gervais is a genius - end of conversation.
Tony Sharp - 05/01/2006
I can't stand the man. Had to sit through the Office as my girlfriend loved it. I didn't laugh once! Likewise his Politics stand up show. Yawn. Reading through these comments it seems I am not alone in thinking he's a prat. He is unfortunately already to big for his boots. Still, when you are as rich as he is I guess you have the right to be. Give me decent sitcoms like Fawlty Towers and quality stand up UK comedians like Jasper Carrott any day
Steven Henry - 25/12/2005
He is not funny. people who like The Office like it because they have been told it is funny. It isn't funny in the slightest as a writer he is awful compare it to the greats like Richard Curtis who wrote Blackadder. Stand-up he is even worse. he throws gags which have been done better by those before him. He is over hyped and over rated he shouldn't be famous because he can get a couple of smirks out of people. He is diluting any creditbility to British comedy.
Dave - 22/12/2005
Ricky Gervais is the most unfunny man on television. Truth is he isn't funny at all. The Office" was the most useless television there was; who is telling us that Gervais is a funny? Some TV critic I suppose. One day I look forward to some real comedy on television.Ricky Gervais won't be anywhere near it.
Oisin - 15/12/2005
He is undoubtedly the best and most entertaining thing to happen to the comedy scene in years. A legend, and the definitive 'laid-back entertainer'.
Ian - 01/12/2005
I like Ricky Gervais, and loved The Office I'm a huge fan of all the comed.. Now the bad news, I thought Extras was total and utter crap. The comedy emperor is butt naked. Someone needs to have a word.
Mark Manning - 25/10/2005
Ricky Gervais is a God of comedy ,his stand-up is an unrivalled work of pure genius. This man is the new messiah
Dannish - 02/09/2005
As a stand-up he is very ordinary and doesn't deserve his status as a guaranteed theatre seller. Disappointing
John D - 08/07/2005
I enjoyed the episodes of The Office that I saw, but feel that both this programme and its star are a more than a little over-rated. Hailed as a great by casual comedy fans.
Vyne - 14/06/2005
The Office is a masterpiece - Ricky Gervais is a comedy genius and I can't stand to hear people slag him off.
Lizz - 20/05/2005
I thought The Office was a work of genius, and Gervais' stand-up shows were pretty good. But I am slightly put off by the fact that either he based the character of David Brent very closely on himself, or that he is milking the success of this character for all it is worth.
Jim - 16/05/2005
So what if his stand-up material is controversial, it's brilliant, after all it is just a persona. To those offended, accept it or live in a world of sunday afternoon two-Ronnie comedy.
Jess - 14/05/2005
The Office is good- but shouldn't be held up in the way it is. Brent's character is brilliantly pulled off. But the concept and main joke isn't as original as is perceived. As for the stand up- Politics was embarrassing. The first 20 times he pointed at a disabled person or a black person and rambled on in his way, it was quite funny. But Ithink someone should point out to him that we've got the joke now and we're wondering if he's gong to to grace us with a second one. + getting two hundred people to laugh at a picture of an author because he looks gay, at the end of Animals, makes me feel quite uncomfortable.
Mark Lawton - 04/05/2005
You can not get funnier than Ricky Gervais, he is amazing! Everything he does from the office to stand-up and even just to normal interviews he is hilarious. There'll never be a funnier comedian as him.
Charlie - 30/04/2005
This guy is the best and funniest at anything he does: stand-up, sitcom, children's books. Definitely the funniest man alive and an inspiration.
Tom - 12/04/2005
Remember, Gervais' standup character is a persona. The comedy is in laughing at the opinions he expresses rather than with them; see him in interviews and he's actually a very intelligent and quiet bloke. As for him being unprofessional, he makes it feel like he's the funny guy down the pub making a few people laugh, even though it's an audience of thousands. That's what really makes the humour work. If a comedian has a casual manner is there no way they can be funny?
Jake - 04/04/2005
Ricky is absolutley hilarious. He is, contrary to some people's belief, adown to earth comic whose TV series, stand-up, book and radio show have been the funniest for years.
Richard - 19/03/2005
I almost laughed, once, bout sums it up. Some people write comedy, some people perform it. Ricky, stick to the first one.
s Girl - 13/03/2005
Unprofessional as a stand up, can't help thinking he couldn't be bothered to even try.
Gary - 09/03/2005
Very much enjoyed both Animals and Politics (to a slightly lesser extent). His comedy is about reducing things to a petulantly crude commonality; thats what makes Gervais. And I'll be very glad to see what hes going to do with Science.
LJH - 04/03/2005
Don't really like his stand-up acts but The Office is the avsolute greatest wotever-the-hell it is in the entire world! Ever!
Julie Anderton - 10/02/2005
Ricky Gervais is a comic genius. The Office is arguably the best comedy - its originality ensured it was a hit. His stand up was equally funny. Animals was better than the recent Politics, but I can't wait for the third tour Science
Bill - 09/02/2005
People spew the title 'comic genius' far too liberally and that detracts from true comic greats... sorry to break it to you but Gervais is not one of them. Comedy for armchair fans who only have to turn over from The Office on UK Gold to Animals on their DVD player. One feels he's just milking the hype whilst it lasts then (hopefully) he'll disappear, probably with a fair bit of wedge in his back pocket.
Roy Ainsworth - 01/02/2005
I thought The Office was better than any other comedy that we have ever had in Britain. I agree that Politics was not as funny as Animals, but still great. There is so much more to come from Ricky and I will be buying it all. Class act, I just hope he doesn't get too big for his boots.
Validas - 28/01/2005
Genius. He really understands what it is to be second class.
Stian - 21/01/2005
Animals was fantastic, Politics wasn't quite so good but still had some good bits but screw those, this guy made The Office which is easily a contender for the best comedy ever made. Completely original, Ricky has redifined modern comedy in an untterly genius way

Have to agree with the people who didn't enjoy Politics - lazy and unproffessional to the point of checking his watch. Certainly the worst gig I've seen in the West End. £30 wasted I'm afraid.

The whole idea of Ricky's comedy is that it isn't conventional humour and the edge that he adds to his works makes it even more funny, it isn't intended as offensive but is meant to be controversial.
