The funniest Scot – is Australian

Boos at competition verdict

The Scottish Comedian Of The Year – is Australian.

Boos greeted the announcement that Ro Campbell had taken the title following the final in Glasgow’s O2 Academy last night.

And in a further blow to Scottish national pride, runner-up Rick Molland is a Liverpudlian – and he, too, was greeted by jeers. Only third placed Graham Mackie is a born-and-bred Scot.

However, rules of the competition, sometimes dubbed the SCOTY, state that entrants need only have lived in Scotland for a year, or have a Scottish grandparent to qualify.

Campbell, who won £1,500, has spent several years living north of the border, and his set covered the time he spent living in the Shetland Islands. He was previously a finalist in the 2007 and 2009 competitions,

Before last night’s final, Campbell said: ‘If I win I will be donating all the money to a good cause - my tax bill.’
