Camden Crawl 2012

Walking around Camden, you wouldn’t know there was a festival on. And not just because at any time of year, the streets of this vibrant corner of North London are thronged with the sort of hipsters and oddballs who make Glastonbury’s Healing Field look like a corporate AGM.
The 20+ venues Camden Crawl uses host music and comedy every night in any case, but the advantage of this weekend is the wristband, which means piunters can walk away from anything that doesn’t take their fancy.
Like, for example, Ross Lee’s musical Horace Fignernips – the only hour-long comedy show in the festival’s programme, presented not once but three times on Sunday, in the prestigious Jazz Café. The sparse audience trickled, and eventually gushed, out as this amateurish, self-indulgent spectacle inflicted its witless, grating efforts on their patience.

Lee – best known as BBC Three’s The Prankster – imagined this a satire on modern comedy, The protagonist, which Lee plays himself, is an unfunny but ambitious would-be comedian and virgin with a five-year business plan but no jokes. His name? Barry Chancer. Yep, it’s that obvious.
The contrivance is that after dying at an open mic night, Chancer finds a hat, via which the spirit of a dead comedian can enter his body and find a new success and hedonistic lifestyle. Imagine The Mask, but with no jokes, verve or Jim Carrey… and you’ve got Son Of The Mask. This is infinitely more unfunny, than even that lame-duck sequel.
Where The Mask’s Stanley Ipkiss companion was his dog, Chancer’s is his mattress, forcing one poor actor to spend the hour hemmed into bedding. At least he could act, unlike Lee’s desperate mugging, which had neither the jokes nor the style to come off as gloriously exaggerated. Unsubtle scenarios were played out with a grin-and-bear it enthusiasm and a painfully unfunny script – whether Chancer was his awkward self or supposedly invigorated by a comic great from beyond the grave.
It’s a shame this unrepresentative mess was given such a central position at the Crawl, while much better comics were sweating away in tiny rooms.
In the awkwardly-shaped space above the Camden Head, for example, Manchester agency Gag Reflex programmed an afternoon of robust club comedy, compered as playfully as ever by the mischievous Ray Peacock. Spotting the festival’s official photographer in the room, he decided to stage a fight, Deirdre’s Photo Casebook-style, creating another moment on spontaneous silliness, never to be repeated.
Of the acts Chortle saw there, the ever-reliable Keith Farnan entertained with charm and good humour, while making serious points about Size Zero models and not-so serious ones about the economic crisis blighting his native Ireland. Mop-haired Ben Van Der Velde wasn’t so consistent, but sometimes offers perfectly sharp turns of phrase that set him apart.
An even stronger bill was offered in the similarly crowded venue above the Black Heart, courtesy of the accurately named Really Lovely Comedy.
There, Jim Campbell was a highlight of the day, thanks to exquisitely written, punchline-driven material that mined stereotypes of Essex life and his own clumsiness without cliché. Delivered with an alluringly relaxed stance, this was quirky yet accessible stuff from a future star.
Patrick Monahan was his usual effusive self. Yes, he over-milked the applause, and yes he has more cheeky charm than he has material, which here largely concerned itself with the less sporting reasons for enjoying the women’s beach volleyball. But that charm goes a very long way, and disliking him isn’t really an option.
Sketch duo McNeill & Pamphilon also won over the crowd, thanks to a strong line of self-deprecation, acknowledging limitations of both the form and their execution of it. Such an engaging delivery gives their weaker sketches a get-out while enhancing the more imaginative ones, such as the witty scene set in a pre-decimal corner shop.
Between acts, compere Thom Tuck had difficulty holding the audience with his offbeat mockery of straight-to-DVD Disney films, as his appearance inevitably hearalded a coming-and-going of festival-goers keen to seek out what else was on offer, or simply sample the food and stalls of a typical Camden Sunday afternoon. But such is always the way of festivals… at least he didn’t have several hundred people in a tent to contend with.
In the evenings, the venues are turned back over to the up-and-coming bands – chosen by music industry insiders – which has made the event so important for rock trend-followers. Comedy, and the rest of the daytime programme, which was extended a couple of years back, is more of a welcome added extra than directly justifying much of the £67.50 weekend ticket.

Saw Patrick on sunday night in Bromsgrove pure talent cant wait for his next show
Andy - 29/10/2011
Saw this guy in Bristol last night and was hugely disappointed after all of the hype. Spent the entire first act milking the misfortunes of the first few rows and attempted to turn this into a material. This worked for the first ten minutes but the repetitive nature of his approach wore thin as did the initial rounds of the applause. In total he attempted three jokes/anecdotes in that time each of which fell flat with no obvious punchline. Possibly his second act was better but by then I was on my home. I certainly won't go out of my way to watch this guy in any format in the future.
GLEN MANEY - 27/09/2011
I just love self appointed comedy critics don't you? I was at Bloomsbury and saw a different gig.So did the people I followed out who'd had an excellent night.I NEVER cease to be amazed by self appointed critics. AMAZING!
Christopher Bate - 22/02/2011
I saw him in the oddest of places, doing comedy in a leisure centre in Leicester as part of the 2011 comedy fest. He was very funny, animated and he really got the crowd on his side. Lovely bloke too. That usually helps.
paul rainey - 07/11/2010
Saw him at hull comedy festival doing support /compere. Genuinely funny, nice bloke
Ana & Pete - 17/08/2010
Saw Patrick compere at Late n Live at the Edinburgh festival and he's awesome! Best comic on the night by far. Went to his adult show the following day and he didn't disapoint. He didn't repeat any of his jokes from Late n Live and was even more awesome. One to watch for the future. Looking forward to him touring in my area
Douglas Thomson - 30/06/2010
Patrick at Eden Court Theatre Inverness was most certainly the best act of the trio of comedians on the night. Good rapport with his audience and lifted the evening and steered it away from being a mediocre gig. A comedian to watch in the future.
Dean - 08/02/2010
Excellent. Saw him at Smart Ass Comedy Club in Derby on thursday. Can't wait to see him again, hilarious from start to finish
Hana Vitkova - 24/05/2009
I have seen Patrick for the first time tonight. He is one of the very good comedians. Open, warm and a nice man who does kinda sweet comedy. :)also his accent cracks me up
Nigel Lord - 14/10/2006
Having read the comments here, I was expecting a paucity of material, but hoping his on-stage personality would carry it. It didn't. His enthusiasm does see him through, but I don't think you could even call most of what he does stand-up comedy (despite the half-Iranian, half-Irish Teeside backround that could have provided a wealth of material). If you're going to base your act on the people in the first row of the audience, go watch someone like Al Murray do it the way it should be done...
Steve - 13/07/2006
I saw Pat at Late N Live last year, and thought he was good. He dealt with the heckling using original put downs and got laughs from most his material. It wasn't the best I've ever seen him, but he certainly didn't bomb from where I was sitting
Don Moses - 04/07/2006
I recently booked Pat to compere a corporate gig - he was incredible. Although it was a quality field of entertainment the audience were waiting for Pat to come back on stage. Either he was on red hot form or he is a outstanding compere.
John - 28/06/2006
Seen him at Late & Live two years running and he absolutely bombed both times. His solo show might be OK, but I'll not be rushing to see it.
Pat Rowles - 31/03/2006
Have to agree with many others here - hugely likeable and interacts well with an audience, but some actual material would not go amiss. Probably a very good compere
Chris - 20/03/2006
Last time I saw him he reduced grown men to tears by shutting up the silly chav at the front. Quite simply one of the funniest stand ups around and one of the nicest guys on the circuit. Worth seeing if you get the chance
Dave - 13/01/2006
Naturally funny but there wasn't much material there, maybe because he was compere. However, if you're going to talk to the audience, maybe it would be a good idea to listen to what they say instead of spending the whole evening going "Wha.. Huh.. Wha??" Funny but not a genius
Dilly - 27/12/2005
I think you this guy is ACE. Funny on stage, never used swear words, always says "fella" and he's just really genuine
Jason Cairns - 19/12/2005
Funny, funny man indeed!
Laura - 14/11/2005
I think he should lose the Postman Pat musical montage but apart from that he is the funniest stand up i've every seen. Really good.
Jason Holdcroft - 07/11/2005
Like having a mate from the pub on the stage. Warmer than an old guy's slightly damp pyjamas, but funnier and less smelly. Seems genuinely interested in the audience rather than just trying to make fools of them, but gets plenty of laughs out of whatever he learns about you without resorting to staple gags. Good fun, 'feelgood' comedy.
Ollie - 29/10/2005
Had me laughing for ages. Very engaging, and dealt with some hecklers brilliantly. A pleasure to watch.
Drew - 23/09/2005
A great Butlins Redcoat in the making, but a poor stand-up comedian. We had to wait 15 minutes of him doing interminable inaudible audience banter to 3 people sat at the front until the rest of us heard anything resembling a funny gag. He's got loads of confidence and a nice smile, but that's all there is. He's like the comedy equivalent of a Big Mac - if you're hungry, he kinda hits the spot at the time, but 20 minutes later you're still starving. Approach wih caution if you're after intelligent laugh-out-loud comedy of any substance.
Caroline and Mick - 08/08/2005
Patrick is a pleasure to watch in action - very warm and naturally funny. We saw an Edinburgh preview last month in Manchester and were inspired to travel up to see some of the festival - caught him again last night and was still one of our highlights of the weekend.
Kate - 01/06/2005
I saw him in Bristol a while back, it was the first comedy gig I went to. I laughed so hard, the way he bonds with the audience is awesome and the jokes come thick and fast and his finale was so hilarious I thought I was having some kind of laughter-induced heart attack. So, so good.
Dave - 15/12/2004
I've seen Pat a couple of times in the last year. He's a great improviser, a genuine nice guy and hilariously funny. More than just a comedian with potential... if you haven't seen him, do so.
Ross - 17/09/2004
Accurate review. Saw Patrick in Torquay early September and he just blew away the crowd. Went almost an hr and half (unscheduled)! Contrary to reports here, this length of time certainly didn't drag with this crowd. Very likeable and easy to get into. His audience interaction is second to none and the Postman Pat/Jess routine finished the set perfectly.
Debs - 27/08/2004
Very funny guy. He has a genuine enthusiasm for everything and no ego about his work at all. One to watch...
Delia - 09/08/2004
Saw a preview of his 2004 Edinburgh show in London. I think Patrick has a lot of potential to be a great comic but at the moment its just that - potential. He has a likeable stage persona and is a good performer and for the first 20 minutes or so he really had the audience. But he's prone to going off on tangents and explanations that aren't funny and start to grate after a while. Charm and charisma will only get you so far with a paying audience that want laughs for pounds. He will make it but he needs stronger material and a better structured set if he's going to last a full hour-long show. One to watch though
Geoff - 12/07/2004
Saw him last night in Nottingham. It was his first one hour show - he's not yet ready for it. The set was overlong, the material weak - and the audience very kind! My attention really wandered - he had nothing interesting to say at all. At one hour it seemed more like two and was about 50 minutes too long.
Philip Swales - 05/07/2004
Saw him last night at the Hartlepool Studio. Had to do two sets because he spent so long improvising with the audience that he never actually got around to doing his material. Managed to wow the audience both times.
Emma - 16/06/2004
Second to none! Superb audience interaction and off the cuff comedy.
Lilly Smith - 14/12/2003
Engaging and a riot on stage. Manic brillance, rolled up in one attractive small package. You just want to take him home with you.
Zophie - 07/10/2003
Really friendly funny guy, makes the audience relax. As an MC you look forward to him coming back.
Angela Poynton - 17/09/2003
One of the hardest working people out there on the circuit right now. He's everywhere He's one of the most naturally funny people I've had the pleasure to know and it's always a joy to see him perform, usually because you can always see how much joy he gets from performing. Despite his obvious talent and potential to go very far indeed the man has no ego whatsoever and is incredibly supportive of new acts. Open, warm, funny and friendly on and off stage, if he wasn't born to be a comedian I can't imagine what else he would be.
JC - 17/09/2003
The new Michael Barrymoore without the bad stuff in his personal life. Old ladies love him.
Brian McInally - 11/09/2003
I've had the pleasure of seeing Patrick Monahan a few times - I've even been on the same bill as him (I'm just an amateur open spot nobody) a couple of times. The guy has talent and charm in spades. One of the very best around, he makes it all seem so effortless.
Wendy Smith - 03/09/2003
truly warm and friendly lad, who is easy on the eye and happens to be very funny.
Marianne - 26/08/2003
Saw Patrick twice in Edinburgh recently and he had us in stiches. Really naturally funny guy and seemed to come into his own in the more intimate gig, where he bounced off the audience and was a natural comedian off the cuff. Had our cheeks sore from laughing. A great night out.
Ellie - 11/08/2003
No great material. Quite liked the Jess the cat bit though
Stu - 03/07/2003
I found he bonded well with the small crowd and soon had us hysterics. I can't remember him telling any jokes just seemed to rip the piss out the audience.
