Peter Kay: The Tour That Doesn't Tour Tour

Peter Kay is a great entertainer, but a mediocre comic. After seven years away, he’s back with the same brand of straightforward home-spun observations he’s always peddled, although they didn’t seem to make quite the same connection with the audience as they once did. Yet by pulling out all the pyrotechnics for a full-on rock and roll finale, he ensured a near-unanimous standing ovation from a sold-out arena. That’s unarguable… and why this comeback tour will gross around £26million in ticket sales alone, let alone the proceeds from the inevitable DVD and well-stocked merchandise stand.
The products on offer there tell their own story. You can still get ‘garlic bread’ T-shirts should you wish, indicating this show isn’t going to generate many new catchphases of its own. Where once he talked about t’internet, now he mentions th’iPod. I’m guessing that didn’t take the full seven years to write.
In fact, much of the writing is pretty lazy. In a long section about TV, he slags off Grand Designs, Supernanny, Secret Millionaire, Embarrassing Bodies, How To Look Good Naked and Come Dine With Me. Looks like he couldn’t even press the remote to change the channel off No 4.
The comments he makes are pretty much what anyone would come up with if asked to describe the show. For instance, Come Dine With Me ‘isn’t a cookery show, it’s all about nosy bastards’ or Supernanny Jo Frost ‘just states the obvious’. Which is rich from someone who’s made a fortune doing just that.
His cosy nostalgia is rife here, as expected, and while he’s describing things we can all relate to, there’s little spin on it. Remember how you used to have to put the immersion on hours before taking a bath? Or how you’d have Imperial Leather soap for special occasions till it was worn down to just the label. Yes, I do remember – but comedy should surely be more than a good memory, laced with trademarks.
Very rarely would Kay recount something specific to him, such as witnessing his dad trap his testicles in a sun lounger, or the time he took an ill-advised swig of Coke from a friend. These were by far the best moments – nice little anecdotes skilfully told, rather than simply repeating shared experiences – and I yearned for more.
The format of the evening, in which we spend a lot of time looking at an empty stage, makes it difficult for Kay to build up momentum. In three hours, he’s on stage for 80 minutes, with two long breaks, one midway through the set and one after opening act Rick Astley sets a cruise-ship lounge atmosphere with a songs including a hideous medley of Manchester acts including New Order, Oasis and – shudder – the Smiths.
But Astley encompasses everything that also epitomises Kay: a ‘guilty pleasure’, combining nostalgia and music. There’s no disguising the fact Kay would rather have been a pop star – as his X-Factor spoof and countless kitsch charity covers prove – though he’d probably be almost as happy running a mobile disco in the Bolton area.
His love of music manifests itself in the second half, firstly when he expresses envy for the Guitar Hero generation when he had to make do with imagining his father’s spade to be his axe; and secondly in his old trick of playing song samples from his Walkman, and describing how he misheard the lyrics.
Well, I say ‘he’. These mondegreens, as they are called, are widely available on the internet. So when he suggests a Sister Sledge actually sing ‘just let me staple the vicar’ in We Are Family, and brings the house down with it, it’s a observation you can grab from Google. Maybe it doesn’t matter – his audience love them even more than they love the old pub gags with which he starts his show, as always. He’s giving the what he wanted.
The encore in which he lives out his rock-star fantasy is a perfect example of this. Of course it’s a brilliant showstopper, because he’s using the music of Queen, and how can that not get an elated reaction? But still there’s still a curmudgeonly argument that wants to urge him: ‘If you want to be a musician, at least learn to play a goddamn instrument.’
However the 750,000 people due to see him on this tour can’t be wrong. Can they?

He is shite.
Spike Eaton - 15/11/2011
A fraud and a plagiariser. Have seen much of the material on his latest DVD before. Why isn't this self-satisfied fake outed by all in the know??
Riera - 12/11/2011
Peter Kay is one great bg marketing machine. His forthcoming DVD is unlikely to contain anything new. Why do people bother?
colin - 13/12/2010
He is like a special needs entertainer, and if you find him funny try the Chuckle Brothers. Failing that, play peek-a-boo with someone, or try a baby rattle to amuse yourself. He's a lazy lardbag. "ooh remember this biscuit or that thing?" Yes greedy fattyboy, and do you remember when comedians were funny!? away back to planet arse, pal. Does your mummy vet your jokes for you diddums?
Dave - 05/11/2010
I went to see the first night of the show at the O2 last night. If you like Peter Kay, which, if youve paid 40 odd quid for a ticket, im guessing you do, you shouldnt be disappointed. I dont know why the reviewer on here, and some other feel the need to point out the flaws with Kay's material, as if these really bother you, your not going to buy tickets.
Riera - 06/06/2010
Sometimes I think I've been asleep for years and then woke up to find the world had changed so much that I no longer recognised. Peter Kay is a throwback o another age. There is nothing new, exciting or refreshing about his observations.
James - 05/05/2010
Saw Peter Saturday on the fifth date of his comeback. He was brilliant! I take the point that he is an entertainer and alot of his act very generic, but his delivery is still wonderful. He gets harshly treated amongst comedians and comedy snobs, they seem to forget what made him famous. I have been angry at his continual greed re: rehashing old material and I am something of a comedy snob myself. I still think Daniel Kitson is the best I have seen live (although if he finds out i have been to a kay gig, i probably wont be allowed to another of his). You cant take it away from Kay though, he is a great stand-up! At the end of my row was a lad of 12 and in front of him a woman of 185 if she was a day. Both were rolling with laughter. He gets stick for having such a broad appeal, but he has funny bones, a natural comedian.
Lisa Renshaw - 22/11/2009
I am absolutely disgusted with the amount of tickets that are being sold on ebay and all the other ticket websites for around 100-200 pound. I am a huge fan and sat on the laptop waiting to book tickets. Ticketmaster continually crashed. Hence to say we sat for two hours trying to get two tickets and after the considerable amount of waiting time the website took we missed out on theses tickets. Obviously touts had bought a huge amount to see for three times the price. Its terrible when I cant even buy 2 tickets for my family without having to pay nearly £200 for them.
Luke - 21/10/2008
He needs to get off and get back on stage.... Pronto. That one-off on C4 as absolutely flawless as well as his stand-up act, but it may be a bit rusty because he's been away for so long.
Dan Damon - 10/11/2007
Christmas is coming; Peter Kay is getting fat; he's flogging another DVD; full of material that is now old hat!
Uilliame - 12/06/2007
Very funny comedian. I hate people who go around copying his famous lines like "garlic bread" and think that makes them a comedian, and the problem is people laugh when someone says it. I wish Peter Kay would stop merchandising himself and get to some proper comedy again.
Emz - 10/04/2007
Peter Kay is amazing and he makes me laugh more than anyone else! His comedy is so observant and is funny because its so real! Everyone has a granny or aunty like the ones he describes and everyone can relate to him! One of the greats, a truly divine stand up of our generation!
Jack Ashcroft - 03/02/2007
Awful, tirsome, regressive, boring, unimaginative, bubble gum. Arm wrestling a sleeping two year old is more challenging
petra - 15/01/2007
I laughed on every page! Iwas going in fo an operation and decided to start to read the book the night before. Glad I did, it cheered me up no end. Back from the op and the hospital now (*phew} and i finished the book tonight. Classic
Laura 14yr - 14/01/2007
Peter Kay cracks me up, I have got all of his DVDs and no matter how many times I have watched them I still find him hilarious, I even have all of Phoenix Nights DVDs too.
Mark, Wirral - 07/01/2007
I broke my collarbone slipping on a dogturd on the way back from a funeral and it was the 2nd most depressing day of my life. The most depressing was the day Peter Kay decided to become a comedian as that has caused me far more pain
Pea Tear Griffin - 01/09/2006
I was once a massive Kay fan, I've been watching him since 1997 - which made me extremely upset when I went to see him on the "my mum wants a bungalow" tour. Just like on the DVD you will see that it is the same gags from the shows he played in 97, re used to a new crowd. I wouldn't have minded if it was one or two - but the entire set was recycled. Since I have seen numerous television interviews, excerpts from televsion and the release of more merchandise, and found that they are also re-issues of old material. To be honest, Kay has the ability with his delivery to be one of the world's true greats, but he lets himself down by using old material and of course, if you didn't know, writers for his act. It upsets me to see him hit such acclaim without actually being worthy of it, when such comedians like Adam Hills are over looked. It would be a refreshing change to see another Jack dee break through but with Kay as king it might be a long time.
Chelsea - 02/08/2006
Peter Kay is brilliant , Makes you laugh till it hurts. I have nearly all his DVDs . We want more from Peter Kay.
Megan - 31/07/2006
Peter Kay is a refreshing comedian for me, he aways manages to make me laugh. I think that not just people from northern England can get his jokes - he appeals to all ages. He's great
Krystyna - 07/07/2006
A legend, everything he says is totally true and that's why it's funny.
Sara Q - 08/05/2006
Peter Kay. What a legend. I can't tell you how many fans he's got over here in Oz and not just Pommies either, even though his comedy is based on British life, the whole world gets it. Keep it up Pete and dont forget your fans down under.
Emmy - 17/04/2006
Peter Kay is great. A real, cuddly warm hearted comedian that evryone can love. Even when a joke bombs, it's OK because he's so friendly that we can forgive him anything
Amber - 13/04/2006
Why are people always ready to blame someone else? Surely it was obvious that the Bolton and Manchester performances were on the same tour, just different locations? Why shouldn't he make some extra cash - I'm sure you'd all jump at the chance. He hasn't deceived anyone, merely promoted previous successful work to those who hadn't purchased the Bolton DVD. I can't believe so many of you are so quick to judge - one minute you are his fans - the next - his enemies
Julie - 30/03/2006
There's no denying that Peter Kay is a fantastic entertainer and natural showman. His material is real and touches everyone thats why it's funny. You can watch his DVDs over and still laugh hard at the material every time. I must admit though ,is the relentless cashing in on his previous success really needed? Wy doesn't he just concentrate on his stand up where he is divine. And why doesn't he come down south! stop making the divide yourself, Peter. we love you too
Slav Da Man - 24/03/2006
What the hell does everyone see in this guy?All I see is a fat bloke who uses his well-known persona just to make some cash! Examples of this include: Same material done over and over again, Max and Paddy...again, a workout DVD - from a fat bloke?, that bloody Amarillo song redone badly, the list goes on!
Jono Bolton - 21/03/2006
Peter Kay has put Bolton on the map - a true legend to be proud of. It's not often you get a comedian that your grandparents can watch - you'reup there like Nat Lofthouse to us Bolton folk Peter. Sod the rest
Nicola Dolby - 10/03/2006
Peter Kay is absolutely fantastic, I watch all his DVDs over and over again and still laugh as much everytime, Peter you are a genius, I love ya
Charles Thomson - 12/02/2006
The defence for the MEN DVD is overwhelming. Yes, it was filmed on the same tour. But isn't that exactly the point. Isn't that why everybody is labelling him a cash cow? Because he recycled the same tour on a new DVD, which is inferior to the original?
Debbie Whitaker - 12/02/2006
I am an absolute fan of Peter Kay's but I've got to say his latest DVD was a huge disappointment and a waste of money. It was the same as the other two. Absolute rip off.
Kev - 10/02/2006
This man is the Twor Ronnies, Eric and Ernie and Peter Cook and Dudley Moore all rolled into one - absolutetly fantastic
Amy Neal - 01/02/2006
I just love Peter Kay, I really do...but was SO disappointed when I got 'Live at Manchester' for Christmas and it was exactly the same as the Bolton DVD. Come on Pete, what you playing at mate? Is it not about time you came up with some new material? And some new tours would be great! I would be first in the queuefor those tickets, but just make sure it contains some new jokes please. Give something back to the fans....no more garlic bread
Ali Jones - 31/01/2006
My boyfriend and I love Peter Kay and we were pleased to get the Manchester DVD for Christmas. We only got around to watching it on Sunday and I was horrified hat it is EXACTLY the same as the Bolton one (albeit much shorter!) - what a total rip off!! Can he actually get away with this? Surely it should have said on the front. I am disgusted
Don The Geordie - 25/01/2006
And a Keep Fit video, plus Texas video isn't selling out? Dear oh dear - and we all wanted comedy to be the new rock and roll. He's no different to Anthony from Big Brother now.
Jack - 20/01/2006
Peter Kay is truly hilarious. His stand up is very good and Phoenix Nights is pure genius. Max and Paddy is great fun and is really original and by far the best ever spin-off ever. Jack 20.01.06
Andy Jones - 15/01/2006
Live At Manchester, was another part of the Mum Wants A Bungalow tour. It's a tour get it. If you went to see the biggest ever UKband and they sung their same songs would you moan? The extended special fetures are what your getting with another DVD. He's a comic genius and your all muppets for moaning. The DVD is like Ronseal Wood Sain, it dose what it says on the tin. Get over yourself and moan about somthing else that you didn't read properly.
Richard Bowman - 10/01/2006
After reading all the comments above regarding the MEN Aena DVD being the same as the Bolton Halls makes me laugh even more! The whole Peter Kay experience is about taking the piss...Anyway we as true fans would have known thay were the same anyway, so why complain?
Alex Ellaway - 09/01/2006
The only reason the material on the Manchester Arena VD(see what i did) is the same as Bolton Alber Hall is because it was the same tour. All comedians use the same material on the same tour because if it was different each place, some material might not be as funny as others, and would not be fair on the people who live in different places
Charlie Thomson - 07/01/2006
An utter sell-out. When I saw Live At The Bolton Albert Halls, I thought I'd be a fan for life. But now he seems to be just cashing in. The new DVD is all old material and only 40 minutes long, and before that it was Driven To Distraction, where the special features were longer than the actual feature. Not to mention the awful Max and Paddy and that so-called Greatest Hits CD. I can't stand him anymore.
Becky - 07/01/2006
Peter Kay is fantastic, typically Northern and familiar. Never fails to make you smile
Chris A - 01/01/2006
You've got to hand it to Peter Kay, few comics have gone from the-next-big-thing to comedy-icon to tired-has-been in such a short space of time. Used to think he was OK; now he simply bores me. I admire the guy for making so much money, but comedy great he will never be. He'll be whoring his huge arse on I'm A Celebrity within two years - mark my words. Shame.
Andy Hepburn - 31/12/2005
Add my name to the list of those who bought Peter Kay's DVD, only to be disappointed. Yes repeat material from his previous release and only 47 minutes of standup. What a rip off! The extra material is actually longer than the main gig. Come on Peter. Be fair!
Darrell - 30/12/2005
I reckon he's probably got his mum a mansion, a holiday home abroad, a roller and a few bars of gold by now, never mind a bungalow. 'What a great performer' and indeed he is, burt he's been practicing the exact same stuff since the late nineties... well polished... 'hey... kids at weddings... WHAT"S ALL THAT ABOUT'. Pheonix Nights was great, but so is Dave Spikey, Justin Moorhouse, Toby Foster and all the other cast of comedians that were so absent in the Paddy and Max nonsense. 'Hey, let's have a singalong...' but first let's ask Mr Johnny Vegas who brought all that to the Frog and Bucket when they were both resident comperes. Hmmm...
Jason - 30/12/2005
Got the new DVD Live At Manchester for Xmas. Sat all family round the TV for a good laugh - we were gutted, it was the exact same as the Bolton DVD. Wasted xmas night - what a bloody rip off. He shouldn't get away with it.
Adrian Hughes - 28/12/2005
I bought the Bolton Halls DVD last year for Christmas and decided to buy the new one called Peter Kay Live At Manchester Arena - £15 worthof the same disc as last year. Complete waste of time and money. I'll be asking for a refund and complaining to trade descriptions.
Simon - 28/12/2005
I feel totally ripped off as I just paid £13 for Live in Manchester and its the same as the Bolton one except with a few added stuff like the documentary of the tour and the godawful Tony Christie song. You've gone down in my estimations PK.
Nikki - 28/12/2005
I love Peter Kay! Every time we watch his DVDs we laugh so much (to the point of crying) He is a naturally funny guy and so down to earth. But then again all us northerners are like that we know how to live our lives. Thanks Peter for showing the rest of the country what its like to have a sense of humour.
Carly - 27/12/2005
I really enjoyed the first two Peter Kay DVDs, but I thought this one was a lazy attempt at making more money. All of the jokes he used were the same as he had used before, and I felt like I had wasted my money on buying it.
Paul - 27/12/2005
So I now own the Blackpool DVD, the Bolton DVD, and now the Manchester DVD - and, guess what? They're all the same. Based on that, I'm sorry Peter, but you've gone way down in my estimations. I used to think you're funny, and you probably still are, but you're aslo prepared to rip off your fans with the same old guff time and time again. Poor show.
Ben - 25/12/2005
I absolutely love Peter Kay's observational stlyle comedy, its something to which we can all relate. However, I recently bought Live In Manchester DVD, and was expecting, at least, a bit more new material. To find that it was completely the same set as Bolton Albert Halls, but condensed, I was very dissapointed. It appears to be purely a money making scheme in time for Christmas. The man is a genius, no doubt, but he's done himself no favours this time around.
Johnny - 24/12/2005
Funny when I first watched Top Of The Tower about three years ago, became repetative very quickly and became tiresome after having to hear "Galic bread?!" every ten seconds when I walk down Preston's high street.
Anne Paton - 10/12/2005
Just bought Live at the Manchester Arena. Bought his last DVD too. Enjoyed both, but isn't it time he had some new material? I feel a little ripped off that the majority of material was on both DVDs. I will probably give this DVD to someone else as a present - what's the point of seeing the same thing again?
Nick - 24/11/2005
When I heard about Peter Kay's video with Texas, I was filled with fear. At first, I wondered how he would ever top his performance in the Amarillo video (for me, the highpoint of his career) where he..erm, walked along and gurned. But then, when it was shown on Children In Need last week ('filmed and sent in', naturally) all my doubts crumbled away like some kind of bread. It was truly phenomenal. Wearing a WIG! AND gurning! And don't start me on the film parodies! Why has no-one thought of this before? What a talent to cherish.
- 19/11/2005
He is a truly talented comedian. Everytime I watch Live At The Bolton Albert Halls, I find it funnier each time. Anyone who hasn't seen him, I think is missing out on a bundle of laughs.
Lisa Norris - 02/11/2005
I don't understand all the North/South comments on here - a comic is either funny or they're not, and Peter is hysterical! I'm a Southerner and guess what, I find Billy Connolly, Les Dawson and Victoria Wood funny too! The acid test of a great comic is the quality of their live performances and Peter Kay is one of the best stand ups in the business. Great that he has achieved so much and is still so young, with a huge career in front of him.
Nath - 07/10/2005
Get him back to Butlins - quick
- 03/10/2005
Just love this man he as brought so much fun into every day life from me and my family eating out shouting garlic bread. I wish this man all the luck in the world he deserves it he works so hard. Fantastic man
Robby - 26/09/2005
Have watched That Peter Kaye thing, Pehoenix Nights and Max and Paddy. Whilst there is no doubt they are funny I think a lot of it is down to the editing and production staff. The commentary is abissmal. Every time Peter Kay tries to comment on the DVD's and give us some snippet such as where the film was made etc., Patrick comes up with some filthy line and spoils it.
Windows - 19/09/2005
Those of you who don't like Max and Paddy need to watch it again - believe me, it's a grower. I'm a big Peter Kay fan and was quite disappointed when I first saw the series but after watching it a second time I noticed so many things that I'd missed when watching it originally. Phoenix Nights is one of the best comedies ever to hit our screens, only people don't rate it as highly because it wasn't on the BBC.
Pual - 18/09/2005
Brilliant, the funniest man in Britain. I pity the poor southern students who'll never understand northern working class humour
Charles Thomson - 08/09/2005
Very funny the first time you see him, but very, very repetitive. I would be hesitant to seek out tickets for hsi next tour unless I was assured that he'd got some new material.
Colin - 28/08/2005
After years of watching Peter Kay I have only just discovered "The Peter Kay Thing" on DVD. It is pure brilliance and the funniest thing I have seen in ages. His character "Lenard, the oldest paperboy in britian" is without doubt the greatest thing he has produced so far. Fantastic
Jase - 22/08/2005
Peter Kay used to be very funny. He had all bases covered when it came to comedy. Unfortunately he chose to use the same material over and over and over again until it became stale and meaniningless. His 'nostalgia' style comedy was funny the first couple of times but like the comedy situations he purveyed, it's now very old. He needs to reinvent himself. He wouldn't have to do this if he adapted his style and routine with the times but he's still stuck in 2001 comedy wise, and 1980 material wise.
Debbie - 22/08/2005
Peter Kay is absolutely brilliant. The best comedian ever! He never fails to make me laugh-his jokes are original but very true
Monty - 19/08/2005
Really bland, really boring, kinda makes you wonder why so many people find him so funny. His set seems to hardly change over the few times I've seen him and he's failed to ever bring me out in more than a snigger. His only joke seems to be based around him being nothern and working class, well so am I and I've never found it all that funny.
Carly - 19/08/2005
Peter Kay is brillaint, makes you laugh till it hurts, Can't wait until he tours again. We want more of Peter Kay
Warren Mitchell - 31/07/2005
Naturally funny. Can understand why some people from the South may not get him. Luckily, I'm a Northerner, so I have a sense of humour. I'd rather watch a naturally funny person like him, than an accountant type "comedian" such as Jimmy Carr.
Stu - 23/07/2005
I thought Top of the Tower was utterly hysterical and That Peter Kay Thing is an almost flawless series but it's been downhill since then - Phoenix Nights S1 was good but S2 was a disappointment, and Max and Paddy was one of the most risible TV "comedies" I've seen. The simple fact is he's gone off the boil and isn't as funny as he used to be.
John Tillotson - 17/07/2005
Peter Kay is a God. He should have his own chat show. I can watch his work over and over and I keep finding more and more jokes hidden in his fantastic sketches.
Helen - 04/01/2005
Peter Kay is definitely the funniest comedian ever as far as I am concerned. We absolutely adore Max & Paddy and have just bought The Power of Two which is brilliant. Keep up the good work Peter.
Adam Walsh - 03/01/2005
Peter is a right legand. He made me and my family laugh for many a time. On the Paul O'Grady show as a Christmas tree, how funny! My mum has just bought the fitness video and has laughed as much as she has lost weight, Me and my family were disappointed at the new DVD at the Manchester Arena, same stuff. But I suppose he doesn't have time to write new matierial with the Phoenix Nights and stuff.
Jak - 01/01/2005
I have seen both the Bolton Albert Halls DVD and Live At The Manchester Arena and I do find live at the Machester Arena a rip off because it is the same except it costs more and goes on for less time
