Paul Foot: Still Life

‘That was a lot of effort for three laughs,’ says a punter leaving Paul Foot's latest Fringe show. It's a view succinctly put and it get to the heart of this latest display of lunacy from the louche comedian.
Certainly Still Life is not without charm and, by the standards of some previous outings, it's quite tight, almost as tight as the pair of white Seventies-style slacks Foot wears to complete his Rod Stewart chic, along with a leather jacket, a kipper tie and a mullet.
The show starts by not quite starting, Foot ekes out the backstage announcement as much as possible and then comes from behind the curtain to map out what will happen when he actually does make it to the stage for real.

This doesn't happen for a good 20 minutes but in that time he has won the audience over with his OCD-like preparations and his description of the applause he expects to get at certain stages, one level corresponding to how much we would applaud a certain historical event (to give it away would spoil one of the best jokes of the night).
When finally on stage Foot reads some prepared material from postcards, including one half-yarn or ‘glimpse of comedy’, about an accident-prone prostitute. Soon after, he introduces a brilliant time-wasting wheeze, a toy stick horse, that, depending on which way it is held, determines whether Foot will speak English or gobbledygook or a mix of both.
There can be little doubt that Paul Foot has got some front when it comes to wasting the time of his audience, groping around for inspiration or embarking on semi-improvised musings on the virtues of lever arch files. At times prancing and pathetic, at other times eloquent and inspired, the lasting impression of the show is an enjoyable bemusement.
If that can be the case even when you know what he's about, well that must mean he is doing something right, mustn't it?

Sydney Comedy Festival April 2013 - 1 hour show maybe 10mins of decent material. Absurd rambling but not funny absurd rambling. First show I have genuinely wanted to leave. Alternative theatre perhaps but not comedy. Funniest part of show was the final 10 mins when he encouraged the audience to buy a CD of his material - now that was funny.
harry - 23/09/2012
He gives comedy a bad name and doesn't deserve to be called a comedian. The judges of Chortle and So You Think You're Funny must have been on crack to allow him to become a finalist
Ian - 23/07/2012
I have to agree with a previous comment, Paul Foot is one of the most original comedians in the world. Just when you think you have him sussed, you see a new show and find yourself thinking "am I really watching this happen in front of me?" all over again. While certainly not for everybody, it's great to see him getting the recognition he's been deserving of for a decade or so when he was flying under the radar. He's an absolute legend and one of the people that turns just watching live comedy into what it should be - a memorable, unique attack on the funny bone and all the senses.
Daws - 07/04/2012
Have not willed a show to end before. Just not my thing others in the audience seemed to though. Shame as had high hopes.
Geoff F - 02/02/2012
Saw him do Set List in Nottingham, and for me he was both a revelation and the stand-out act of a distinguished bill. The pacing was excellent: he clearly thought things through before launching out into his impro, but at the same time was doing little comedy bits, to keep the audience happy, while his mind was working overtime to create a routine. Very imaginative, very funny.
Matt - 24/10/2011
One of the funniest and most original comedians in the world. He is a wonderful, uplifting act and his Edinburgh show this year was terrific. Those who do not enjoy him must lack imagination and be dead inside
Rory - 22/10/2011
People seem to love him or hate him, I'm in the latter category, he's not remotely funny, his humour is idiotic especially the horse head gibberish thing and the part where he pretends to be a women. Couldn't wait for the show to end!
WB - 10/10/2011
Paul Foot. Well very hit and miss and my real criticism of the show is that the 'gibberish' part with the horse's head was intrinsically an excuse for a lack of real material. I know Paul has been busy gigging but I wish (Pre-Edinburgh) he would have really put some proper time into writing at least 55 minutes of material, I think he genuinely wrote twenty - shame as he has some real potential BUT that seems to be the case now for quite a few years. At Edinburgh 2012 I expect/hope to see Paul finally reach his potential.
Lydia - 21/08/2011
Worst comic I have ever had the misfortune to see. It didn't feel like he actually knew what he was doing. At one point he was playing some sort of game whereby the holder of a toy could decide whether he spoke in gibberish or English while he did improv according to audience suggestions. Fine when we couldn't understand him and he was speaking gibberish (although this quickly became tiresome), but when he had to continue his improv in English, he had nothing interesting to say. 99% of his jokes were boring and lacked any sophistication. The intro was drawn out and uninspiring. I wish I had asked for my money back.
Stevie - 11/01/2011
Saw Paul last night, very poignant. I loved the show, not every one will, but that's not a bad thing, very adventurous. I agree with Paul Foot's comment!
Higgeldy Piggeldy - 03/01/2011
Wonderfully original and brilliant, Paul Foot is.
Pete - 23/10/2010
Terrible, just terrible.
Claire - 30/09/2010
Saw him in Windsor last night...the most 'painful' and cringeworthy stand up I have ever sat through. Not funny one little bit, considered asking for my money back...

Paul Foot - 05/03/2010
He's my favourite comedian in the world
Paul - 02/03/2010
I agree with Scott for me he is brilliant, original and cutting edge. Among the few comedians I would travel to see including Trevor Lock, Milton Jones, Stewart Lee and Joe Wilkinson
Scott Allen - 07/04/2009
He's a genius, and his influence on other comics is immense. His is an act I'd cross town to see, and one of the few comics I'd consistently recommend.
Alan D\'Arcy - 18/03/2009
Watching him in the Wheatsheaf in London Almost ruined a weekend in the capital. luckily I also caught Russell Howard who restored my faith in young British comedy. Paul Foot is not funny. Watching him struggle on stage trying to explain his jokes was awful. Avoid at all costs.
Katie - 16/03/2009
I thought he was awful. I spent the entire evening cringing on his behalf at how un-funny he was. To be fair, the audience seemed split - half of them were Americans who seemed to find his incoherent ramblings utterly pant-wettingly funny, while the core of the audience sitting around me seemed to recoil in horror at how this man was bombing on stage. I think the worst part was that Paul seemed to find himself irresistably amusing, often pausing to snigger at his own poor jokes. The low point for me had to be when he decided to talk at length about his theory on making 'gay babies'. Just not funny! A comedian who has to point out to the audience that he is about to tell a joke is not original - he's just bad.
Frank Gibbons - 10/09/2008
I'm not a fan of his, to be honest, but American reaction to his appearance on Last Comic Standing proved, yet again, how wide the gap between their perceptions and our reality are. Over here, he's described as "surreal" and compared to Kenneth Williams or Peter Cook. But look at all the sites and forums devoted to Last Comic Standing -- just about all the Yanks mentioned Mr Bean in describing him! Whom he's absolutely nothing like, in looks or approach. Considering they rule us now, they could at least try to get on our wavelength.
Michael Monkhouse - 23/07/2008
In the kinda language he'd probably use, rather a curate's egg... The nervy 'stance' may be a valid persona or just a Woddy-Allenesque excuse to turn a negative into a positive. The desperate gag-explanations may be a neat postmodernist swipe at the genre or just a cop-out to pad out the set. The poncey language can be jolly silly, or it can just get on your tits and distract your attention from the meat of what he's actually trying to say. I enjoyed Paul's set, but it isn't for everyone.
Adam Montgomery - 04/09/2007
Subversive and strange. You will love it or hate it. I love it. If you hate it, you are wrong. I have seen entire audiences crying with laughter whilst he's on stage. More daring and inventive than seven other comedians put together
White Rabbit - 14/08/2007
I saw Paul Foot last night in Edinburgh, and I was enthralled. Beautifully crafted and with a lovely style, if he doesn't hit the big time there's no justice.
Neil - 04/08/2007
I saw Paul on Edinburgh and Beyond on Paramount TV talking about You've Been Framed and the rising cost of Chinese takeaways. He was fantastic - made me a fan in an instant.
David - 04/07/2007
I know Paul is not everyones cuppa, but you either get it or you don't. I first saw him several years ago and the jokes, about nothing really, were superb. I shall make a point of visiting him soon.
Noel Potter - 06/11/2006
Paul's humour was schoolboyish and immature.I felt I was in the middle of a playground row having to listen to the embarassing barrage of insults thrown at a heckler; which seemed to consume most of his act.Perhaps Paul is a scripted comedian who is easily thrown by interaction. For that reason, I would perhaps give him another chance, but I was frankly embarassed for him based on last night's performance.
Fiona Kenny - 08/10/2006
Saw Paul Foot the other night, was the highlight of the evening! The brilliance of his frustrated rants on small talk, cake, early morning fascists and other such absurdies are absolutely hilarious. Paul Foot is a fantastic individual, and his individuality is something that makes his performance work so well. I love him!
Fiona Jade Absinthea - 27/08/2006
Paul Foot brings so much joy into my life! He is such a true individual character. I think that if your expecting the usual sort of standup comedian, then you probably wont get it. I love the way that there is nobody else like him in the whole world. I think he is hilarious and love him eternally. Magic and joy
Hannah Lloyd - 28/07/2006
Strangly brilliant.
Andy - 30/05/2006
I saw Paul at a small venue in Whitstable, Kent and found his unique brand of story telling very funny. The entrance onto the stage from this man wearing a maroon jacket, brown trousers and orange shoes was met with an awkward silence from the audience, but they soon found themselves in fits of laughter. Sometimes the laughter was excreted through a quizzical countenance as the fantastical subject matter was not so much the essence of the comedy as the physical delivery of it. Overall though his routine sent everyone home suitable entertained.
Ed O'Meara - 26/05/2006
I saw Mr Foot at a club in Leicester Square. His wandering style caused some of the audience to lose interest, fall asleep or walk off. Fortunately I was enthralled, and the departing bodies meant I could have a bit of a stretch. If you're a comedy fan go see Paul. If you like your jokes to come uniform and pre-assembled from a gag machine, don't waste your time.
Christine - 22/03/2006
Very poor. He's just watered down Emo Phillips's act from 20 years ago. Pointless.
Megamix - 01/03/2006
Saw him on Paramount and found his comedy very funny - I can see how you either like him or just don't get it - but so many comedians are like that - Jim Davidson for example - I know who I'd prefer to see.
John Davies - 27/02/2006
The Awkwardness show is the perfect formula for Paul Foot's rare kind of genius. Subtle stuff - and a real sense of adventure. Go Awkward into this great night
Jennifer - 20/02/2006
Pure comic genius
David Trew, Jesters Comedy Club - 20/01/2006
As a club owner, I have seen many, mnay acts on our stage. Sadly, Paul has been one of them. He has probably performed around 5 times at Jesters and never done anything other than appallingly badly. It is a shame, because I tend to agree with many of the positive comments below. There is something there, I just feel that he needs to spend a lot more time trying to find it.
Richard - 31/05/2005
Paul Foot is probably the most unique comic there is. you either love him or hate him. i love his comedy myself Richard 31.05.05
Anne - 27/05/2005
Like so many others, I have seen him all over FAQ U. Even though what he was saying most of the time was complete made up nonsense, he really does pull it off in the funniest way ... maybe it was the hat he was wearing? Anyway, i hope we see more of him now that it\'s over. Anne 27.05.05
