Martin Hill Martin Hill

Though still a newcomer, Martin Hill demonstrates a lot of promise – but the odd indication of potential bad habits, too.

He has an assured manner that instils confidence in his future abilities, a mastery of the metaphor, and a good knack of taking things far too literally for comic effect.

The bulk of the short set he currently performs involves a couple of outraged rants, bundling in lots of brief, daft phrases in ever-increasing anger. The consequences he imagines in his spluttering rage can stray into the arena of weak, studenty surrealism, but he usually sidesteps that pitfall because of the context, and his skilful way with words.

While his premises might not be that far out of the ordinary, it’s the imaginatively-put phrases that leap from his routine which give him an edge amid the ever-growing forest of new acts.
