Altitude 2013

After a spell in Meribel and now three years in Mayerhofn in Austria the Altitude Festival has established itself as an appealing part of the increasingly crowded global comedy festival circuit. It might not be up your street - or up your ski-run – if you don't want to spend all day sliding down mountains, but it is hard to fault the apres-ski entertainment over five fun-packed evenings.
Actually you could fault it, but only by last year's impeccably high standards. 2012's line-up included crowd-pullers Tim Minchin, Kevin Bridges, Frankie Boyle, Milton Jones and Jimmy Carr. This year there were only two major names, but they were arguably even bigger ones. John Bishop arrived with 15 mates in tow and Eddie Izzard arrived in high-heel boots and glossy red nail varnish.

Izzard headlined the opening gala in the 550-seater Europhaus, after some very good support, making this much more than a Highlight Club gig on steroids. MC Andrew Maxwell donned his site-specific lederhosen
and explained that due to the effect of wearing chamois all day – and no pants – he was polished from the waist down. He also showed off his language skills, before discovering that there was only one German speaker in the audience – ‘so much for the local advertising’.
The full house of Brits loved opening act Marcus Brigstocke, who hit the ground running, or should that be sliding, with a series of old gags at the expense of snowboarders who spend their days pushing the snow off the mountains. The day’s blizzard conditions also gave him some good new lines about his own adventures on the slopes. ‘Llike Stevie Wonder getting a blow job – couldn't see shit, but it felt good.’ We wouldn't normally quote gags, but I can't imagine him doing this one in London, assuming that the UK's winter finally ends soon.
Brendon Burns had something new to talk about. He has just been diagnosed as 30 per cent deaf and has started to wear a discreet hearing aid in one ear. This meant that his set shuttled between the usual raging at the world and marvelling at the fact that he could finally hear his own voice coming through the monitors. I suspect Burns will get some good material out of his condition and probably an Edinburgh show. Proof that in comedy nothing is ever wasted.
The second half opened with what could have been a corny visual gag but actually won the audience over immediately. Michael Mittermeier is a major star in his native Germany, but thanks to the support of Eddie Izzard is making inroads in English-speaking countries. A lot of his schtick was about national differences – Brits and their queuing, politeness and using the phrase ‘Bob's your uncle’ – and hardly groundbreaking but Mittermeier is a clever, assured performer who makes you feel that you are in safe hands. He also has a good, clownish physicality and, like most Germans, speaks better English than most English people.
And so to the eagerly anticipated headliner. I've been slightly concerned about Eddie Izzard lately, afraid that he was so busy with so many other projects he had started to neglect his comedy muscles. He seemed a little unsettled at Russell Brand’s recent Comic Relief night and was not great when guesting at an impro gig just before this gala. But from the moment he strutted on he seemed to have found his form again, Maybe Izzard is so unique – and definitely unique among the mainstream crowd-pleasers at Altitude – that he really needs a headlining spot and plenty of time to shine.
His 40-minute set had a sprinkling of familiar material, but it was mostly a preview of his Force Majeure tour. Once again Izzard picked at his preferred themes of history and religion, with an added appeal to his fans to stay British but also embrace Europe: ‘The war is over. Learn another language.’ As many great philosophical minds have already done, he argued that God does not exist, and if he does he's a bit rubbish, but Izzard did it with more panache than most, jabbing a varnished fingernail in the air to emphasise his points.
Human sacrifice, Magna Carta, Richard The Lionheart and Charles I also came into the mix and there was a nice ego-deflating story about a recent cab trip from Wembley to Central London. As Izzard got out the taxi the driver asked if he was going back to Wembley. Izzard replied yes, and virtually reeled off his tour dates there, but what the cabbie meant was would he need a lift back there later. Proof, if ever it were needed, that comedians live in their own bubble.
Yet Izzard, with his long-term political ambitions, is clearly one who has plans to engage with the outside world. That will have to wait though. In the meantime Altitude suggests that he has got his stand-up mojo back.

Even worse than the BBC's infatuation with the feeble Marcus is his audience of whooping metro-cretins. Superb writing? Where? Just a badly-drawn demo of what it means to sound like a wanker with no redeeming qualities.
Anon - 04/06/2010
Not even funny.
Mandy Allan - 04/01/2010
His plagiarism of Jon Stewart having failed - primarily because Stewart, though of dubious politics, actually KNEW about the political arena he attempted to satirise, Brigstocke should stick to comic acting.
Harriet R - 14/09/2009
Clearly from the comments, Brigstocke's not for everyone. I have a similar background and similar politics to Brigstocke, so maybe that's why his stuff works for me, particularly since he is very aware that his background colours his views and experiences. I like the rants, I like the Daily Mail straw men. I like the fact that most of the time he's PC but can still say awkward stuff (rarely, I'll admit).
David - 13/08/2009
One of the best rising stars in comedy. Witty and hilarious.
Bill Ryan - 25/07/2009
Brigstocke is an effortlessly funny individual. His jokes come thick and fast; he always remembers that funny comes first; and never fails to leave a room satisfied for those that want their comedy to pack a punch and those that enjoy middle-class ways. To me, he is the epitome of what good stand-up should consist of. He has a political persuasion that filters through his arguments, he enjoys mockery but only when there's a purpose, and his jokes are beautifully crafted and well-told. In brief, he is a slick and superb stand-up. Well done, chap.
Arable Land - 16/06/2009
Brigstocke would have made a fabulous 17th century witchfinder general. Conformist peacock.
Simon - 01/06/2009
I think he's great, and the Pacman joke is still one of the best I've heard
ns - 11/09/2008
What he does isn't really comedy. It's more of a rant and he comes across as bigoted and dislikable. The comedy shows he's done on tv have been awful.
Alaric Dynevor - 21/08/2008
Ha ha, oh do shut up you morons, what on earth are you talking about? He's a fabulous comic and that's all there is to it. Piss off back to Jongleurs and your chicken-in-a-basket comedy experience if you don't like having to think occasionally.
Harold off neighbours - 19/08/2008
As funny as a memorial fly past by the Luftwaffe over Stepney.
james adams - 14/08/2008
Smug prick
Darcus Braggstock - 07/08/2008
Brigstocke is the kind of bore you find yourself next to at a dinner party, smug, opinionated, conformist bilge delivered in a bullying head-boy knows best manner. Teeth grindingly PC attitudes that reveal the total lack of a single creative or independent thought in the man's head. and he makes a fortune from it! Genius!
Derek Brown - 24/03/2008
Marcus Brigstocke should realise that humour based on ageism is cruel and simply not funny. Especially at this time, when one of the most heroic generations this country has ever seen, having experienced WWII and all that that entailed in social and personal trauma, are reaching their twilight years. Let's hope he lives to a ripe old age to suffer some of the indignities that he thinks are a proper subject of comedy. Humour based on ageism, is no different whatsoever from humour based on physical disability, as ageing is simply that - an accumulation of physical disabilities in even the previously fit and healthy.
John - 18/03/2008
Saw Marcus live a couple of months ago and then bizzarely on Question Time. He's not only funny and intelligent but interesting too. Not sure what else anyone would want out of comedy really. He even does knob gags if pushed (no pun intended).
Tim - 12/11/2007
Saw him last night in Cardiff, didn't know much about him beforehand and truly disliked him afterwards. Very hypocritical, telling religious people not to preach when his whole show seemed to be devoted to preaching and imposing his own beliefs on the crowd. Not much funny at all, he seriously ruined any good atmosphere when he had a long serious talk with a guy in the audience who answered his phone. Most comedians would make a joke of it but Brigstocke got badly offended and very angry. Not professional at all. He is very good at accents though!
Jack - 04/11/2007
Falls between stools, and wish he would stay there. On the lamentable, Late Edition he attempts to establish some sort of authorative, or informed tone then proceeds to undermine it by playing to a perceived bored studio audience with puerile cheap shots. History Today made flesh.
Darren Smith - 18/10/2007
He is quite simply, a piss-poor comedian, not at all funny and quite the smug public schoolboy.
Michael Monkhouse - 26/09/2007
Mr Brigstocke doesn’t have the wit and persona to sustain an entire show. Satire’s great, but it kinda loses its bite when you’re quoting five-year-old Now Show material. Arrogance is great, but it kinda collapses when you can’t handle hecklers who’re nastier than you. And ripping all hell outa yer audience is great, but when you suggest selling your wife to immigrants and meet stone-cold silence… And when Marcus gets on to American foreign policy and the EU constitution, I feel it’s all been done before. Brigstocke’s cool. And tenacious. But maybe he oughta step back and decide why he became a comic in the first place before launching more gags at us.
Connell - 14/04/2007
PC comedy at its worst, so unfunny its hard to think why anyone would want go and see him... nListened to him on the Now Show last night and it was painful, he was ranting on about how everyone was racist, he had a go at Bernard Manning, at least Manning is funny some of the time and that's more that can be said about Brigstocke..
Neil - 26/02/2007
Saw him this weekend. I can't say I found him funny at all. I like his comedy writing like in Giles Wemmbley Hogg. I was also impressed with his abilities on HIGNFY - I think he's an ideal host for that - dry, cutting and a smartalec. But his standup was dreary. It was very political but all he seemed to do was to put a Daily Mail strawman to knock down. It\'s all so black and white to him - no complexities to work with. He might as well be standing up and saying "hey.. you know what? racist thugs are not very nice people". Yes. And so what? He didn't touch on anything remotely controversial and just dealt in snide characature. Not to say I didn't enjoy his stage prescence but I was simply uninspired. The other acts were much better. I think he falls into the witty but not funny category.
xXx Lou xXx - 08/02/2007
I find Marcus brigstocke is hilarious and have been to see him on tour three times. Also been to see the late edition and Room 101 and he was funny there too! He has won countless awards and this comic genius deserves to be known alot more when it comes to TV he is alot better than some of Britain's best loved comedians who unlike some, does not brag about how much money he earns or how many awards he's won. Keep up the good work, Marcus
Christopher Bennett - 30/10/2006
I saw Brigstocke live in Newbury the other day. He seems to think that the constant repetition of schoolboy obscenities will make his material funny. Unfortunately he is so unfunny that it would take a lot more to raise a laugh. The audience was not convulsed, rather there were many slightly embarassed titters during an evening at which we were subjected to a constant political rant. The performance was ludicrous, boring and worst of all entirely unfunny.I came away feeling defiled by his deep pessimism, apparently everyone is venal, everyone is corrupt and nothing is ever done out of good motives. I know that this is not true but it is grim to spend two hours or so with someone who does not.
Jo Phelan - 25/10/2006
We went to see Marcus expecting satire, as that's his thing. But found that there was too much politics, and not enough comedy. We came away thinking that it had been a reasonable show, but that we wouldn't actively recommend it to others.
Jackblackandhisdogsilver - 19/09/2006
He comes across as a funny man, his shows are watchable, but as lowly payed lower class prole that I am, and often the target of his humour, I find him slighty offensive.
LJH - 15/08/2006
There are a lot of bad reviews here for a consistently funny comedian with up-to-date material and good heckler put-downs; get over it - he's great! His Live at the Apollo Set was one of the best - see him
Bill - 02/08/2006
I have heard Marcus for a number of years now on Radio4 and thought highly of him. Until I saw him on TV in Jack Dee's show at the palladium. Why so much use of the so-called F-word? It doesn't add anything, indeed for me it has the opposite effect. Swearing is no substitute for comedy. Poor show, Marcus..
Ben Sissons - 22/02/2006
There's no originality in his act. I felt like I was watching a mediocre comedian in the mid eighties. He could be anyone. He's on tv because he's okay looking and middle class and the middle classes find that hilarious
Steve Pooley - 05/11/2005
Typical 'champagne socialist' - keeps proclaiming allegiance to hard-up working-class families, but I bet he earns more than any of us here
Daz - 13/10/2005
A very funny guy. Saw him on Jack Dee's TV show. Had a grin on my face from ear to ear.
Spicer - 11/10/2005
Seen him a few times. Always the same material. Very self-assured delivery and some funny jokes, but surely its time to see he if he can actually come up with original material.
Kate - 10/10/2005
A very funny man who had me laughing my head off entirely. Very opinionated which helps with his fresh and new comic act. Good show!
Basil - 28/09/2005
Self-righteous, bigoted metrosexual oaf playing to politically-correct authoritarian neo-liberal wankers.
Sam - 26/09/2005
Frequently changes set which is unusual for a stand-up. Sick of people whining about middle-class lefties as if they can go out an acquire a working class accent and deprived background to fit their left-leaning persona. Very funny and observant. Also middle class. Get over it.
Charles Thomson - 08/09/2005
Some great material, but some predictable and somewhat irresponsible comments as well. He was an overall good act, but seemed a little too pleased with himself all the way through. His smugness detracts from his humour
- 15/08/2005
Saw him recently at the Big Chill. The one hour set was absolutely brilliant. Best thing we saw at what was a great festival (yes, that includes the bands). Cried uncontrollably with laughter throughout.
Louis - 18/07/2005
A typical not-quiter.
- 05/07/2005
A wonderful stand up. He performed for 20 minutes at the recording of Jack Dee's new series and was incredible, easily upstaging Jack Dee's old, repeated material.
Matt B - 09/05/2005
Marcus is superb, a very funny, very nice and intelligent chap !! Glad to see he is getting more success of late with TV, it's well deserved.
Gavin Mee - 19/01/2005
I was a bit disappointed to see Marcus. I admit he was very flush but he really didn't light my fire. Maybe caught him on an off-night.
Matt - 18/12/2004
Absolutely fantastic last night in Balham - as he was in Brighton over the summer. OK, the two acts were very similar (which suprised me a bit 'cos he comes up with fivemins of new material every week for R4's The Now Show) but it was just as funny the second time round. Just wished he'd got heckled last night, as his heckler put-down at the Brighton gig was superb.
Mark - 07/12/2004
Without doubt the funniest stand up I have ever seen. Brought the house down.
Neil - 01/12/2004
Tired George Bush bashing didn't even raise a smile.
Chris - 01/11/2004
If you like your comedy edgy and unconventional, then Brigstocke's 'shooting fish in a barrel' tactics are unlikely to appeal. Material is thin and frequently spiteful without being funny enough to compensate. Avoid. Yeah, he is a bit cocky and arrogant, but he has some very funny material to go with it. Dealt with hecklers well. So as long as you dont take him too seriously, he's well worth a watch. Andy 27.09.04
Chris Downes - 25/08/2004
There's something very cabaret about him - which isn't meant to be a total criticism. He's got an assured, confident style and knows how to prepare and deliver very good material, but off-script he's not really funny, and there's something about him that makes you think the things he rants about actually don't bother him at all, but rather he has made a tactical decision to be more successful. The irony is, a comfortable future awaits him entertaining the Middle Englanders in an old fashioned, family-entertainer type way, the very people he tries so hard to convince us he hates.
Ginger Andrews - 25/02/2004
Saw Marcus twice in the French Alps. Both times brought the house down, different sets both times.
