I first meet Linda when I booked her for a gig in Carlisle in 1992. Linda, arrived at Carlisle station and phoned me to tell me she could not find the venue. I checked my info on the gig and to my horror realised that the gig was in Hartlepool... fuck.. So I told her to get a train to Newcastle and a taxi would pick her up and take her to Hartlepool. She got to Newcastle station and jumped in the back of the taxi, and feel asleep.... for some un-known fucking madnees on my part I had told the taxi office to take her back to Carlisle. So after six hours of travel she ended up in the same place. We laught about that night when ever we bumped in to each other . A lovely lovely warm funny lady. Will be much missed Dave Johns, March 2006 |

There is a huge hole where she used to be. A Brief History of Timewasting was one of the funniest programmes I ever heard - at least we have that and her other appearances as a lasting monument. Wherever you are, Linda, keep 'em laughing. Pete Hazell, March 2006 |

I was shocked and extremely saddened to hear about the death of Linda. Whenever I heard her name on the News Quiz line up, I would hug myself in pleasure. Her humanist beliefs, her rejection of so much of the rubbish of our society, her warmth, her utter enjoyment of other people, all shone through, and it's a tragedy that we have all lost her. My most heartfelt condolences to her partner, family and friends. You have lost someone remarkable. Charlotte Littleboy, March 2006 |

Linda would have been astounded by this response - she was always fantastically modest. And unlike many comics, she remained exactly the same person after she had become well known. I first worked with Linda in 1985 and we continued to work together loads and remain friends throughout that time. I'm so sad she's gone but seeing all these messages has been very special. Dave Cohen, March 2006 |

What a massive loss to us all and my sincere condolences to her partner Warren Lakin. I can say I've been reduced to tears by Linda Smith now in more ways than one but prefer the time she sympathised with Tony Blair about the weapons of mass destruction. "I'm like that with scissors, I tear the house apart looking for them, the only difference being I know I've actually got some scissors!" If our reward is in heaven then hopefully Linda will be reserved a seat at the table with Peter Cook, Eric Morcambe, Spike Milligan and their like. I just hope the BBC does her memory justice in an appropriate television tribute. Roger Walker, March 2006 |

I have been trying to place Linda after hearing of her early passing (I'm the same age)I'm terrible with names, once I realised it was she who had my family and I rolling in the aisles each week, I felt guilty I hadn't listened to her on all her other programmes. The world of comedy has lost a great talent, her family have lost more and my deepest sympathy goes out to them and her friends. Pauline Guest, March 2006 |

What extraordinary wit and intelligence she betrayed on all the many radio and TV shows she appeared on. We all love people who can make us laugh and I doubt if there's been a performer in recent years who's inspired as much warmth and affection as Linda Smith, echoed in all the many tributes in the media and the messages on this site. Paul James, March 2006 |

Our deepest sympathies to Linda's family and close friends. She was a great talent and will be missed by many. Christine & Lee Pearce, March 2006 |
