Grumpily amusing McCarthy's act seems very dated - gags about shiny toilet paper, small knobs and even Quasimodo abound. However, he has got a certain charm, and some of his off-the-cuff comments raise a genuine laugh.
It may sound a bit snobbish, but he's very popular with audiences who haven't seen much stand-up, whereas the positively prehistoric choice of subject is offputting for the more comedy literate. That said, he does rise above the material on more than one occasion, to produce a handful of unexpected chuckles.

I laughed and laughed :) loved him x
Saw him at Leeds. He was the compere, and better than the acts. I would definitely see him again
Saw him last night and he was brilliant
I absolutely love this guy, saw him at a Christmas gig and he held the night together while all the other acts crumbled. Top comedian, genuinely funny and very quick - heckle at your peril!
Did a great job at the Walnut Tree, Maidstone for their 20th Anniversary gig. Finished the night off with a bang. Consistently funny, raising many genuine belly laughs!
A very entertaining comic. I have never seen him have a bad gig and he is always a joy to work with.
Haven't seen such a talented compere in a very long time, if ever. Laughed till it hurt.
He just gets better and better! Stormed The Bearcat Club in February 2006. Top comedian
