Josie Long
In 1999, Josie Long won the BBC New Comedy Award at the age of just 17 - making her too young for the champagne that came as part of the prize. Despite the boost the award would have given to her comedy career, she took time off performing to complete her English degree at Oxford university, returning in 2003.
Following the break, she was named best newcomer in the Chortle awards in 2005, and best breakthrough act the following year. In 2006, she also scooped best newcomer in the if.comedy awards for her solo Edinburgh debut, Kindness and Exuberance.
She was subsequently nominated for the Edinburgh comedy award three years running: 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Josie Long: Fringe 2012
You can tell Josie Long hasn’t been a leftist campaigner for long. She became politicised by the Coalition taking power two years ago, and is already frustrated that her activism hasn’t turned the world entirely against the Tories, the ‘obvious baddies’ in her binary world. Clearly no one told her about the lifetime of struggle when she signed up for the cause.
‘It feels so unfair!’ she wails like a petulant pre-teen denied her second bowl of ice-cream, when actually talking about the dismantling of social assets, including the NHS. The childish image is completed by her nervy habit of tugging away distractedly at her T-shirt, a technique that renders her unchallenging, whatever politics she may spout.
Impatiently aggravated by the lack of political progress, she turns much of this hour on to her own personal progress, her mind focussed by turning 30. She wonders why, at such an advanced age, she finds herself living in a trendy warehouse conversion she hates, unable to drive and with nothing much to her life except a job she enjoys. She isn’t really sure of much anymore, and a ridiculous online ‘Things To Do By The Time You’re 30’ list gives her no direction – but quite a lot of material.

Eventually this turns back to politics again: publicly-owned open spaces, libraries, hospitals give her a sense of security and belonging that she now knows she has to put up a fight for.
Getting there, she leaps around between topics, boasting of her mountain-climbing exploits, adoring French socialism or delivering an hilarious Ed Miliband routine, in which she imagines him casting off his ineffectual manner to expose himself as some socialist mobster, getting heavy with the mega-wealthy. It’s a dense show as ideas and routines clamour for attention, and she enthusiastically name-checks the likes of Vonnegut, Larkin, Alistair Gray and Logan’s Run. This is an hour which again comes with its own reading list – contained in the home-drawn programmes she still hands out.
But it’s a bit of a scattergun approach, too, without the explicit driving force of last year’s excellent show about her political awakening – even though she has a way of sneaking in politics even when the audience is distracted by something else, and ultimately making all the elements slide into place.
The result is that the ideas and stories are more satisfying in the long run, once all this has time to settle in the brain, rather than at the time you’re watching it, when the flurry of information feels a little cacophonous.
Eventually she reaches the conclusion of the various parts – a message to herself and fellow activists, to hang on in there – a point reached far more circuitously, intelligently and wittily than just showing us a picture of a cat clinging on to a branch.

Not Keen, Sorry - 08/01/2013
I was given tickets to see her in Edinburgh, not a single laugh to be had anyone. She really is not funny, and the people who say "Oh you must just not understand her" are quite frankly offensive and wrong. I understand her, what's to understand? There is little clever about her act, and I understand everything she does/tries to do, but it is just not working. The rest of the audience clearly agreed because they weren't laughing either. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that the point of a comedian, to make people laugh? Perhaps someone could invent a new form of entertainment called 'Twee Whimsical Tory Bashing' so the people who enjoy that sort of thing can go to see her and the real comedy fans can go to see comedy.
Barry - 07/08/2012
I happen to think Josie is a true comic master, her ability to tell twee, whimsical material that isn't even remotely amusing but still have a career is truly incredible
Richard - 16/01/2012
Look, everyone, she's got no clothes on!
Ryan - 30/12/2011
Josie Long is one of the best comedians around. She's not for everyone but unfortunately with comedy nobody likes to admit they don't get something. People can admit they don't understand a film or that a certain type of band is not for them but when it comes to comedy furiously insist "I do get it! It's just not funny! If it was funny, I'd like it because I have a great sense of humour!" I'd love to see Josie on TV but I know that with more exposure she'll get more people turning up to her gigs expecting mainstream comedy. Thats a shame and I hope her gigs don't become overrun with idiot hecklers expecting rapid-fire one-liners about the same topical bullshit everyone on tv is banging on about.rnrnI've seen her twice this month and I've got tickets to see her again next month. She's quickly becoming the only comedian I drop everything to go and see. She's also beautiful. Not that that matters.

Saw Josie tonight at the Hare and Hounds in Birmingham. Supremely talented and funny, intellectual, cerebral and surreal. Original thinking and hugely entertaining. Would thoroughly recommend. One female friend likened her to having the elegance and beauty of Drew Barrymore coupled with a sweet nature and intelligence. Hope that she comes to Birmingham again.
Dave - 24/07/2011
A group of us saw Josie a few weeks ago in Dublin. It was embarassingly unfunny by anyone's standards, the stories she was telling just werent even anecdotally funny we thought a lot of stuff was lost in translation for an irish audience but it seems looking at these reviews, she just isn't funny. She seems very nice but I wouldn't go to see her again
James - 22/03/2011
I'm utterly bewildered by some of the comments. Josie is wildly talented and incredibly funny. Her gigs go about a dozen steps beyond bog-standard stand-up , I think that's what some people struggle with.
Richard - 11/01/2011
Big fan of Josie Long. She is very very funny. Not got see her live yet but very much looking forward to doing so. She is right up there with my favourite comedians now.
Amy - 28/11/2010
Buckle me in - I love Josie! Face is hurting from laughing and smiling so much. Have seen her before and she's just got better and better. Hilarious but full of absolute truth. Forget looking at breakfasts I could watch Josie everyday for 100 days and be a very happy girl. Without wanting to sound like a scary, deranged nutter - Josie I love you, be my friend!
Me - 12/10/2010
Seen her, and have to agrr with the other 6 recent reviews by people who dare speak out and try and be honest so we can all get a rounded view from genuine comedy fans. Emporer's New Clothes anyone?
zack - 09/08/2010
Saw Josie at this years ed. fest. Not laugh out loud funny, just a nice show for all the family , whimisical and off-beat at times, but she has a nice personality , a winning smile and is sweet . On saying that, she could do with better material and stop spilling out anti-Tory views, which grates a little.
Ted Cole - 15/06/2010
Saw Josie last night at Bums on Seats charity gig. Without a doubt the least funny of all the acts, I'm not even sure she could be called a stand-up comedian. Her routine appears to be just a nice person chatting about things, it's all very pleasant but none of it is funny. Raised a few half hearted laughs with her set and that was it. I'm not sure how she has become so popular, can someone explain?
Wills - 30/05/2010
I was also at the Kill for a Seat gig. Probably the worst act I've seen there to be honest. I'm surprised she stayed on for about 50 minutes. She was struggling with the audience after 10 mintues. The audience at this night is very nice and gives all the comics a chance and she wasn't heckled once, which is a surprise because she was very poor. Not sure how shes getting on TV.
Sam - 28/05/2010
Saw Josie Long at the Llangollen Kill for a Seat comedy club last night. We go at least once a month to the 2 clubs local to us and have done for the past year or 2. Josie was the weakest act we've seen. As others have said, she seems sweet - but unfortunately is desperately unfunny. the audience barely raised a laugh, more the occassional embarrassed titter. The embarrassment was for Josie. She should have quit while she was ahead and left the stage sharpish. The attempts at a Welsh accent in a very proudly Welsh town came across very badly - even though I'm sure it wasn't meant that way. After offending the Welsh people in general, she then had a go at the tories - that didn't go down well either.
Danbo - 18/05/2010
Just desperately, desperately unfunny; I've seen her live a couple of times, heard her on radio numerous times, and on every single occasion she's been shown up by the other comedians on the same bill/panel game. I agree she seems like a nice person, has a genuinely likeable persona, but so f-ing what? I don't pay twenty quid for an evening of comedy to reassure someone that they're nice, I do is so they'll make me laugh/think/gasp. Josie Long makes me snore.
Dave reed - 27/08/2009
I have seen Josie long many times now, never as the main act but as a support. I have to say that I am simply baffled by the praise she gets, and some of the comments on this page confuse me even more! Genius!? Surely not! When compared to the other greats on the scene, such as Munnery, Phil Nichol, Stewart :ee and more. She has failed to raise a laugh from me each time I have seen her, and that includes me and all the people that have attended the gigs with me. She doesn't come across as a comedian, more as a quirky person thrust onto the stage. rnrnHer act lacks any real jokes as such, and normally consists of boring and rambling stories, or facts about herself that are similarly boring. Her style seems to rely a lot on the fact that she looks quirky, but the content of her show lacks any real substance or worth. The fact that she is considered one of the best female stand ups is an affront to all female comedians if you ask me, and in my opinion will only damage the publics opinions of female comics, as she epitomises the general view of them. That is, boring, unfunny, and weird/quirky. I have seen many female comics (never caught their names though) who simply smash Josie to pieces, and deserve all of the praise that she is unduly receiving.

I enjoyed her show SO much in Nottingham, I was part of something special. Lots of laugh-out-loud moments and lots of wonder and awe... genuinely something I'd love to see a couple more times because it was such a great show and warms your cockles.
Chris - 05/02/2008
Saw her last night in Cardiff. She suffered from a terrible sound system but otherwise she was brilliant.
Michael Monkhouse - 02/11/2007
Few comics garner such diverse reactions as Josie Long. From the age of 17, she’s been winning an average of one award a year. But tonight – and it isn’t the first time – there are precious few actual laughs. It’s impossible to dislike her as she babbles and prances and giggles: there’s a real warmth here that’s both irresistible and sadly lacking on today’s snidey cynical circuit. It’s just half the time you don’t know what she’s on about, and by the time you’ve worked it out you’re several billion steps behind her. Josie’s a deliciously passionate performer. Pity so much of her enthusiasm’s channelled into herself, and so little spills out into audience.
Itsame - 28/10/2007
Josie Long is a breath of fresh air. A unique and refreshingly warm performer who shows you don't need to be a self-deprecating cynic to be hilarious and entertaining. The comedy circuit needs lots more of this please!
Mark - 08/10/2007
Saw Josie last night as the warm-up act for Simon Amstell, she was terrible! So much of her material went down without a titter from the audience; I’m surprised that she managed to last for 20mins. She tried some of her new astronomy material on the audience, but should realise that when you have to explain a joke then it’s not funny. Unfortunately this is the second time I’ve seen Josie, the first being a year ago when a crowd, consisting mainly of polite accountants, just started talking loudly rather than heckling, she left the stage in tears that night and I’m rather impressed that she decided to carry on with her career in “comedy”.
Matt - 14/02/2007
I saw Josie last night when she was trying out some new material. It was incredibly good, I haven't laughed so much in ages.
Jenny - 29/01/2007
Seven of us went to see her in Bristol last night; it was one of the longest evenings of our lives. She will have to conect more with her audiences or she will continue to die on her feet. I'm sure she wants to be known as more than a 'nice young woman'.
Paul Donovan - 06/10/2006
Eight of us went to see Josie last night and all of us thought she was a lovely, warm person who would be your best friend in the world in a time of crisis. She is very engaging and likeable, but none of us had a laugh-out-loud moment, though we spent most of the show nodding and smiling and willing her to raise the roof, but I couldn't say she was a complete success - lots of private conversations in the theatre and an incredible amount of people leaving or taking a toilet break, some only five minutes into the show. I'd rather have a drink and chat with her than see her perform - which is a sort of compliment.
John - 14/09/2006
I guess it's a taste thing. I like my comedy sharp, slightly dark. Josie Long is the antithesis of this - a pleasant person telling charming stories that make one smile rather than laugh. Doesn't do it for me at all.
Just previewed her Edinburgh show and it was brill - 28/07/2006
Just previewed her Edinburgh show and it was brilliant; her usual ditsy self with some really clever surreal observational stuff. If you're going to the fringe she's not one you should miss.
Rachel Long - 25/07/2006
Josie was funny at school too... Gym knickers on her head in he sixthform review...*chuckles*. Ah, I'm so glad the rest of the world gets to see her madness now!
Sarah - 21/06/2006
She's utterly, heartwarmingly excellent- the only thing that's made me laugh harder recently is that 'Oxbridge' comment from Mike down there.
Paul - 14/06/2006
Josie is a natural. Seen her many times now and she has never done any "material". She is an excitable and wonderfully captivating MC and a brilliant stand-up with beautiful little stories, mitherings, and observations. She isn't meant for those who enjoy their comedy polished and methodical. Those who love her enjoy her spontaneity and enthusiasm for the funny things in life
- 06/06/2006
Thought she was fantastic, different and slightly mad - all in a good way.
Carter - 04/06/2006
She rambled on without a laugh for well over ten minutes. I couldn't wait for her to get off. Stream of conciousness is one thing, being unfunny is another
Pam - 12/04/2006
Josie went to the same school as me, and was bloody funny then. Thus far from disappointed when I went to see her to discover that she has only got better with time. Brilliant, obscure humour and hysterical interaction with the audience. Glad to see from the comments that most agree,
Ed O'Meara - 11/04/2006
Although trapped in a body of a child, don't be fooled. Though she may come across absent-minded, oddball, even childish, she is in fact a shrewd, fiercely intelligent comic ninja - who can kill you with the same joke in five different ways before you hit the ground. I never thought I would find a joke about Paul McCartney and Axl Rose (with the punchline 'lemon meringue pie') so hilarious. An inspiration to all comics, female or otherwise.
Paul - 15/02/2006
Always genius. Mesmerising and wonderful - fills you with smiles as well as laughter
Big Rich - 30/01/2006
Josie Long is great. She's one of those people that if you ask comedians they love her and if you ask the punters they love her. One of the few comics I always recommend to others to see because she is just brilliant
Juliet Meyers - 28/01/2006
Simply fucking brilliant
Timothy Leighton - 14/09/2005
Clearly the best stand-up in the UK today. She is untouchably fantastic.
