Henning Wehn
Date Of Birth: 10/04/1974
A London-based German comedian, Wehn has been performing as the self-styled 'German Comedy Ambassador' since 2003, playing on the English stereotype of Germans as humourless Nazis, obsessed with efficiency.
He was a regular on the Channel 4 show FAQ U in 2005, as well as Radio 5 Live sporting panel show Fighting Talk.
He regularly appears with fellow German performer Otto Kuhnle, and their show 1000 Years Of German Humour was nominated for the Barry Award at the 2009 Melbourne Comedy Festival.

Original Review:
Wehn is possibly the only German comic working on the British circuit, which is obviously going to be the springboard for many gags playing up to the stereotype of an efficient, but humourless people.
Thus he will tell the most appalling old gag, then forensically, painstakingly analyse it in ridiculously minute detail. Depressingly, he often gets a laugh from the original bad joke – but the unrelenting audacity with which he forges ahead with his obsessive deconstructions is also impressive. ‘Stop laughing,’ he admonishes the audience at one point, ‘I haven’t finished explaining the joke yet.’
It’s an incredibly well-engineered piece – living up to yet another German archetye – managing to subvert many of the conventions of stand-up by so blatantly telegraphing what he’s up to, yet remain accessible and funny.
Yet however good this is, the heavily-accented Wehn always runs the risk of being pigeonholed as something of a novelty act. Perhaps aware of this, he’s edging his routine into more interesting areas. The suggestion he’s an unreconstructed Nazi yearning for the glory days of the Third Reich pushes into darker area, as do the nasty, vindictive traits he subtly affects.
Still relatively new, Wehn is shaping up to be an impressive act able to push at the limitations a few one-dimensional national traits initially suggest.

Jean Marais - 30/11/2012
Henning Wehn is a cheap person, basing his act on comments like the French are cowardly and smelly, the Dutch are horrible (this is true - I saw him in Lewes on thursday 21 novembre 2012). Is this funny? I think not. I don't criticise him for the acts his countrymen made on the French. This attempt at humour has no place in the 21st Century. He should be ashamed.
Steve Barker - 12/08/2012
Just seen him previewing his new show to me and nine other people at the Betsey Trotwood in Faringdon Road. Excellent evening spoilt only by three pissed up Irish blokes at the front who derailed his train of thought a few times. I look forward to the Daily Mail's indignation at a couple of gags
Dan Essex - 14/04/2012
Absolutely unfunny.
Stephen Cowley - 21/08/2011
That the new show 'No Surrender' in Edinburgh 2011 was all new material. Personally I liked the old material, but of course there's only so much material in national stereotypes if the matter is to to be relentlessly light. He could probably do more visually as well as verbally.
Andy Barr - 11/08/2011
Saw his 2011 Edinburgh show last night - It was an absolute stormer of an hour. The best I have seen of him - his stagecraft, energy levels and control were just fantastic. He has come a seriously long way
Bill - 22/02/2010
Saw him in Cornwall as support for Stewart Lee & don't know how I stayed in my seat without running for the exit and screaming. Lazy, cheap jokes about how idle the Spanish are as a race and comparing our reaction to Madeline McCann's disappearance to the stabbing of a nine-year old working class boy. whole act seems to have tipped from the sly comments on racial stereotyping I saw two years ago to some kind of vile populist rant delivered in clipped unemotional tones. He can do so much better than this & enraged parts of the packed audience who started shouting at him
Mandy Allan - 05/01/2010
Like a David Lynch film, one emerges from watching Henning in a state of complete bewilderment. He looks like a dehorned Satyr from Pan's Labyrinth who has swallowed a German accented speak and spell machine, spouting stuff akin to "You know when you go to a supermarket and you see a girl you like, Boy, you like that girl!" and that would be a joke. Shite.
F0ul - 11/11/2009
Saw him in Wrexham supporting Stewart Lee - This fella is so subtle, it is brilliant. Wouldn't recommend him to anyone who doesn't know what subtle means- and who can't handle a jokes involving the holocaust and the Hitler youth!
Paul Sinha - 14/09/2008
Saw him for the first time in ages recently. His simply a delight, with a lovely collection of treasurable jokes.
Kate Buyukhiz - 06/05/2008
It was great to see Henning at Jongleurs Bow on Friday. He was absolutely hilarious, a very intelligent comedian who cleverly dissected his own jokes, and was able to laugh at himself. He plays an excellent character and has thought about every detail, even down to his clothes and choice of stopwatch! For those who thought he was 'racist' - in the words of Henning Wehn "who doesn't have a sense of humour now?" - A very funny and unique act. We will definitely see him again.
Alain English - 04/05/2008
It was a pleasure to see a new face at Jongleurs Bow this weekend with the arrival on the circuit of popular German comic Henning Wehn. As Henning reaches the stage he immediately off-sets the usual I-think-I'm-better-than-you German stereotype by being self-deprecating in both manner and appearance.rnrnHe has a provocative line in international humour poking fun at both his country and himself with a killer gag about sectarianism and Jews. Joyful to watch and looking forward to having him back in a few weeks.
Michael Monkhouse - 09/04/2008
Where racial self-parody adds to comics like Omid Djalili and Russell Brand, with Herr Wehn it just detracts. I've seen him a couple of times and I reckon he'd be far funnier if he cut the German line and just learned to be himself. The is-it-offensive-or-ain't-it stance is a tough one to master and one he hasn't quite managed it. Shame 'cos he's a great gagsmith and an even better rapport-builder.
hans schmidt - 23/03/2008
Absolutly awful! I am German myself and I was embarrassed about the whole thing! He is racist and not funny.
dan R - 03/03/2007
Saw him a few weeks ago and it was possibly the most embarrasing thing I've ever witnessed. He was so terrible he was lucky to escape unscathed. There's a fine line between playing on stereotype and being downright racist. This chap got it so very, very wrong.
Gemma Charlton - 17/03/2006
An original and clever act. Thought he was hilarious
Herr Kunz and Herr Kallenbrecher - 29/11/2005
In Germany, we know that laughing is not the only possible reaction to a good joke.
Dave Dynamite - 15/09/2005
Henning is unique and funny. The full package
Dan Willis - 29/06/2005
I think Henning's great, I've compered him many times and he always makes me laugh even though I now know most of his jokes. In the Frank Carson mould of "It's the way he tells em" .Very funny act indeed.
Charles Thomson - 28/05/2005
I saw Henning on FAQ U. I agreed with his points about vain men being sissies etc etc, however, he seemed to just rant without a hint of humour. And he just listed items from a fried breakfast. What was that all about? He is like Jack Dee except all moan and no humour. A clever guy, but just not funny.
Aaron - 24/05/2005
A magnificent talent. I saw Henning at Up the Creek in South London and was amazed. His comedy is unique and a real treat amongst the live acts of today. A must-see
Felix - 18/05/2005
Great comedian. Just watched him on Channel 4 in FAQ U with David Mitchell and he was the funniest guy of them all
Angie J - 03/03/2005
He has a comedy talent and is learning fast how to use it. He was excellent at Hackney and a well deserved winner.
Mark Taylor - 16/02/2005
It's great to see a young stand-up flying the flag for Germany. His material will mature with time like a fine German wine.
Joan Culloty - 07/01/2005
Er erhält besser und besser.
Nelson - 16/11/2004
His material is positively anorexic.
Fraud Spotter - 15/09/2004
Arrogant
Edward Hands - 07/09/2004
I've seen him twice now and he is rather good. Some of the jokes are old, but he does new things with most of them. And his enthusiasm is infectious.
Phil Clisby - 18/03/2004
This man is the funniest man I have ever met in my life. I mean you just have to look at him.
Another German Comedian - 30/11/-0001
Henning deserves the German Order of Merit for finally making the English laugh about our jokes. Henning's great at presenting our traditional humour. You should give the funny side of modern Germany a try.
