Comedy Hullabaloo Opening Gala

Comics have to play some dives in their line of work... but the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Courtyard Theatre is not, as many point out tonight, one of them. More used to the comedy of Love's Labour’s Lost than the stand-up riff-raff, the venue has been pressed into service for Stratford-upon-Avon’s first Hullaballoo Comedy Festival weekend, produced by the people behind Underbelly.
The town has a not-undeserved reputation for being very middle-class; an image confirmed when host Hal Cruttenden asked who was local, and hands shot up – not a lairy ‘wa-hay!’ to be heard. He was the perfect choice as MC, as bourgeois as the audience; terribly embarrassed about his social status that pangs his liberal conscience about inequality, even if he’s far too comfortable in life to do anything about it. It’s an honesty about the situation of so many Guardian-reading Middle Englanders that gives his gags a punch beyond the astute class observations.
It turns out that playing here was once an ambition of Cruttenden’s, since he trained as an actor before the plan B of comedy took over. ‘Did they employ me at the RSC?,’ he splutters with privileged upset. ‘Did they fuck! So I'm going to desecrate their stage with knob jokes.’ Though in truth, his sharp, witty routine about his ineffectual parenting, his timidity compared to his Northern Irish wife, and flimsy grasp of current affairs was far more stylish than that.

Class plays a big role in Rob Beckett’s approach too, though from a very different perspective. He’s the epitome of the chipper working-class Londoner, even signing off with a cheery ‘be lucky’!
The Lewisham lad occupies similar comic territory to Micky Flanagan, which means he’s almost certain to come off the worse in any comparison. There are some strong jokes and accurate observations in his set, but also several that are more pedestrian, especially when it comes to his archetypal no-nonsense cab-driving dad. However Beckett has an appealing delivery – charismatic, confident and cheeky – that gets the very best out of the mixed grill he’s serving up.
Careering back up the social scale next, as Miles Jupp adopts an apologetic air of privilege, mumbling his ‘erms’ like a Hugh Grant parody. ‘I can play a clergyman, and that’s about it,’ he says of his image, which means he was perfect casting in Rev.
His hesitancy is in contrast to punchy Beckett, which means the laughs don’t roll quite so fast, but he knows how to fashion a delightful line on the end of what might appear to be floundering, revealing it all to be an act. His set mainly comprises of complaints about what shitholes – in his mind – he’s been forced to play before: Liverpool, Newcastle, Leeds, Harlow, great swathes of England beyond the gated estate you assume him to live on. His incomprehension, and occasional withering derision, of a world beyond that, certainly amuses.
Danny Bhoy closed the first half, and takes us away from class, aside from mining a few easy Scottish stereotypes at the head of his set. His is broad, observational comedy – and in fixing it on to petty consumer experiences, he reflects the everyday niggles that many in the audience will have got wound up about: forget global problems, isn’t the Ticketmaster website annoying?
His routine mixes eloquently-put observations of the sort we might all have noticed with a resigned indignation, which reaches its peak in a hilarious story of the swanky restaurant which insisted he wear a jacket. You can see where the anecdote is heading almost from the start, but he strings a yarn expertly well.
After the break, the political comedy of Matt Forde that was, frankly, a bit dry. He is a former Westminster insider, and certainly knows his stuff about party machinations and the importance of image, which makes the big personality of Nigel Farage a more appealing bet than the bland and vague ‘try-not-to-offend-anyone’ vacillations of Nick Clegg or Ed Miliband.
But like many inside the Westminster village, he’s more obsessed with the process and personalities than what issues might arouse real passion. He’s smart enough to know he has to explain some of this, which leads to set-ups that are too long, and payoffs that seem a little contrived. What if Chris Huhne, when he was in jail, found himself in an episode of Gordon Ramsey’s Gordon Behind Bars?!
Still, he knows the techniques of oratory very well, and flaunts them in a reading from Winnie The Pooh in various speakers’ rhythms, which is a strong ending to a set that has the odd wry gag, but is otherwise largely for the wonks alone.
It’s telling that both Cruttenden and headliner Ed Byrne got a bigger laugh from political stories, straight afterwards: Cruttenden from making the subject more personal, about his own ill-informed reaction to the news, and Byrne for creating a harsh but vivid character assassination of Huhne’s ex-Vicky Pryce, rather than offering a more straightforward commentary on events.
As for the rest of his set, Byrne was clearly on form. The instructor at the speed-awareness course he was forced to go on clearly didn’t appreciate his mischief-making wit; but when it comes to his exasperations with life as a father of two very young children and the vasectomy his wife insists on, Byrne makes the material seem very real, and very funny in a routine that was over too soon.

Back to his best in a great venue (Leeds City Varieties). Very clear, funny material with great audience interaction.
Heather Brown - 22/10/2010
Ed was our headliner on 'The Big Gig' last night in aid of The Sick Children's Trust. He was brilliant. The audience were so excited to see him and he did not disappoint! He had everyone in absolute stitches.
Martin - 24/12/2009
Brilliant show in nNewcastle this year! Even though people were still coming in 1 hour after the start.
Tom O\'Brien - 11/11/2009
I went to see Ed in Bournemouth and it was a fantastic show. The only thing is Ed was a bit Irish! Ed, over here in England University is called Uni not college. College is for A levels or for those who don't get into Uni!
Ian - 09/03/2009
Saw Different Class in Warwick/Coventry. All i can say is Ed is a very funny man. Good humorous anecdotes and observations. Not quite as good as Macintyre though ;)
A - 14/11/2008
Saw his Different Class show last night. It was the best comedy show I've ever seen, had me laughing for the whole of his set. Brilliant!
Helen - 02/10/2008
Saw Ed at the Riverside in Hammersmith. We really enjoyed his show, easy delivery, engaging material. He seems to have grown into his skin with this one.
Laura - 26/03/2008
Tired observations from a washed up comic who may as well concentrate on the voiceover and corporate gig work... at least people don't pay for the displeasure
Dave Bromage jr - 04/12/2007
I have to say his material virtually always strikes a chord with me. Saw his live show (from the DVD) on Paramount last week and his observations about London cabbies, lying in bed etc are spot on and delivered in such a way that he can't help but endear himself to you. Very clever, very funny.
Mark Boardman - 21/02/2007
I must have caught him on a night where he delivered the performance of his life. Only several minutes into his slot I was won over, Joke after anecedote after observation he was on a winner. So rare have a i seen a performer really passionate about their job and so eager to please, after having seen the likes of Chubby Brown, Davidson, Hurst, Tarbuck, Dee , Connolly... the list goes on, Ed Byrne is the best live act I have ever witnessed. If you have never seen him, take a chance like a did and you never know, you might enjoy yourself.
Duana - 16/02/2007
I've been a fan of Ed's since the early days. I saw the Sheffield gig of the 2006/7 tour and thought he was brilliant, as usual. I just watched the DVD and was less impressed. He's great with newer material but the DVD was, purposely, a 'greatest hits' and so lacked freshness, good to see the Alanis material again though. So I would advise people to see his live stuff and only watch the DVD for nostalgia.
Dan - 16/02/2007
Ive seen Ed twice at Leeds City Varieties in the past year. He's brilliant, the best comic I've seen, very funny man. I dont get this "old material" thing that people keep saying about him. I've seen him three times now and everytime its been different. Class act, go and watch him!
Sarah - 29/11/2006
The guy is brilliant. I saw him at the Trinity Theatre in Tunbridge Wells recently and he brought the house down. A couple of his routines I had heard before, but every stand-up comedian has a couple of tried and tested gags that make a regular appearance. Most of the set was new material, and very very funny. An incredibly funny guy!
Karen - 23/11/2006
I watched his DVD the other night with some mates, and really wasn't very impressed. The quality is pretty bad and most of the gags are so tired - who doesn't do a joke about security at the airport? I dont think he is very talented at all.
Miss Flea - 08/11/2006
His comedy is all about observation. However, it is very well written material, very well thought out and his delivery is faultless. But I am looking forward to some new material. Some of his jokes have been around a while now and now that he has his DVD out he will need all new material because people do not appreciate paying to go and see what they could easily watch at home. That said, I can see him again, again and again and will never get tired of him!
Maddy - 02/09/2006
Thought he was brilliant in Edinburgh. Kept you laughing for the whole hour. Very funny
Jo - 31/08/2006
Saw him at Edinburgh festival, and was sadly disappointed. Less than half as funny as the BBC stand up show the night previous which was with less well-known comics. Great entrance though
Mike Anderson - 25/08/2006
Seen Ed last year in Cardiff with a couple of work collegues, laughed all night, what a totally funny guy, would defo go and see his show again.
Fiona - 14/08/2006
A disappointing performance in the Fringe. Observational it was, just a pity that most of the jokes were based on obvious observations of which we are all bored. Surely you can do better than rehash the old "Christmas gets earlier every year" cliche.
Julie - 10/08/2006
Ed Byrne hosted the Montreal Just for Laughs all-Irish Gala this year. I thought he was one of the best performers of that night. His material is great, and he keeps you laughing the whole way through. I loved him
Scott - 08/08/2006
Good show at the fringe... my first time seeing him. A bit too family-friendly but maybe that was due to catering to a large mixed audience? When he showed a slightly nastier edge was very funny. Some really good stuff there. Wish he'd either cut that hair or tie it back though - drove me nuts watching him constantly fuss with it
Lisa - 02/08/2006
Ed used to trade on his fresh looks and material, but he's looking and sounding tired now. Lord knows what he'll do when the voiceover work dries up
Kev - 30/05/2006
Brilliant, very funny
Johnny Ramsay - 26/05/2006
Cant stand the guy - so pleased with himself and has no reason to be - his set is crap
Ali - 24/05/2006
Ed did an amazing set at Headliners. He's just on top form right now and all new stuff too.
Kate JJ - 24/05/2006
Get some new material that doesnt involve smoking or sex - gets so dull after 10 years
Daniel Gray - 18/05/2006
I remember Ed in his really early days and saw him last year. His material has definitely moved on and improved. Ignore the adverts, see the show.
Sookie - 01/03/2006
Saw Ed for the first time on his tour last year and have never laughed so much in my life,it was continuous throughout the whole show, the audience loved him, extremely witty man and absolutely charming with it
Ed - 07/02/2006
Without a shadow of a doubt, Ed, is the funniest person I have ever seen
Matthew - 05/02/2006
I saw Ed recently in Chamonix. A small bar advertised a comedy night. We werent expecting much but when this guy came on we cried with laughter for 30 minutes. Everyday stuff with 15 punchlines. You must go and see him.
Mike - 26/10/2005
If this guy hasnt made it by now, he's not going too. Saw him in Brighton and he is still doing the same routine as eight years ago. He clearly doesnt have anything more interesting to write about.
Sarah Chaney - 17/10/2005
I went with friends to see Ed in Brighton at the weekend and I think he's brilliant! his observations of life's little annoyances are bang on the money and he had the entire audience in stitches.
Gabrielle - 16/10/2005
Very good, original and cute. I think he'll go far. Plus, his accent is gorgeous. He's really talented, catch him if you can.
- 31/08/2005
I saw Ed at the Leeds Festival on Sunday, and he blew me away. He was the best comic there, and many of his jokes will continue to amuse for a long time. He had the audience in stitches for the whole 45 minutes.
Katy - 01/06/2005
I saw Ed at the Fringe last summer and he was absolutely fantastic. There was a great audience atmosphere as we were all in stitches. Funny, charming (not AT ALL sleazy in my opinion), fantastic timing. He was the highlight of the comedy I saw. If you get the opportunity, don't hesitate to see him.
Brian - 31/05/2005
Very shabby, dont go
Joanne London - 11/05/2005
Made my skin crawl. Not funny and very sleazy.
- 10/05/2005
Bad night out. He needs to work on some new material - It was disappointing and boring.
Jill Baikie - 29/04/2005
Really great to see him back. Mega-funny guy
Michelle - 24/04/2005
A very disappointing show.
Summer - 20/04/2005
I cant stand this man. He is a totally unfunny, sexist little irish man who clearly drinks and smokes too much
Louise - 06/04/2005
Hugely disappointing live - I'd heard good things and from what I'd seen on TV I was hopeful, but Ed failed to deliver with tired, lazy material - seeing him as part of the Glasgow comedy festival alongside the likes of Stewart Lee and Daniel Kitson only highlighted that fact. Time for Ed to up his game or stick to TV voiceovers and panto.
Ian - 06/04/2005
Saw Ed a couple of weeks ago in Glasgow and was very dissapointed, tired old gags some of which I remember from the first time I saw him about five years ago, he perked up a bit when interacting with the audience but seriously how many times do we have to hear about his really really beautiful ex? He should either quit the crap on TV and work on some new material or give up the stand-up. A lazy, mercifully short set.
Stacey - 04/04/2005
I've never laughed so much in my life, I think he's brilliant, a fan for life.
Melissa - 15/03/2005
Absolutely hilarious and just a bit gorgeous. Brilliant set, the audience loved him
Sarah - 07/03/2005
Saw him last night in Nottingham where he totally won the place over and got called back for several encores. He came across as natural and a genuinely warm and funny guy.
Eva Barnett - 03/02/2005
Saw him at Hempel last night, I was really disappointed. No new material and he just seemed so angry at the world. What happened to the very funny and happy Irish kid who was so great 5 years ago. The theatre wasnt even nearly full and I was very let down by him.
Trish - 31/01/2005
Brillant, funny , charming, Irish. a class act all the way.
Alsion - 12/09/2004
Saw Ed at 'Jason Byrne and friends' charity gig in Edinburgh. He started on his material, but tripped, which got a big laugh. So he then decided to ditch the rest of his material and spend his timeslot falling over. It was hilarious. He repeatedly tripped himself up, fell over a stool, off a table, some of the funniest physical comedy I'd seen. On a night full of superb comics, he still managed to stand out as something special.
Kevin Stanley - 08/09/2004
Ed Byrne is a man with a hatred of stupid people, an abhorrence of violence (because he s not very good at it) a dislike of pikeys and a penchant for rudeness. Put all this together and you have a 32 year-old irate Irishman on stage performing some delightfully dark satire. Even when he s stringing together impressive numbers of expletives and obscenities I didn t feel that he ever lost the audience. But perhaps that's because Byrne quite simply exudes an effortless charm. Only occasionally did he stray away from lighter comedy into the territory of topical political humour. And when he did it was soft enough as to be accessible to all.
Janey - 24/08/2004
Topped the bill at Late & Live. Jokes made me laugh the first time but second/third/fourth airing over as many years...time for some new material? Imagine he'd be a great find for a new listener but would be good to see all the praise propel Ed toward a creative burst and spew up some new gags. It is his job afer all.
