Matt Forde to front political comedy show for Dave

'There's never been a better time for this'

Stand-up and podcaster  Matt Forde is to front a new political comedy series for Dave called Unspun.

The broadcaster has ordered six hour-long programmes to air in September. Each will be recorded on the day before transmission, to ensure maximum topicality.

Like US programmes such as The Daily Show, the new series will mix  interviews with leading political figures and reporting from international comedians with Forde's own comedy.

Dave's parent company UKTV said the show comes at 'a time where political satire has never been more essential'.

Forde, a Labour party activist before turning to comedy, said: 'I’m simultaneously horrified and entertained by the state of British politics so I can’t wait to start making Unspun. It was either do this or become Shadow Environment Secretary and I wanted to do something credible.'

Richard Watsham, who commissioned the show for UKTV, added: 'Firstly, I’d like to thank all those people who voted in the referendum for giving us so much material to work with, there's never been a better time to make a political talk show.

'It’s a significant step for the maturity of UKTV originations that we can take on such a topical and frankly, important series.'

The show is being made by Avalon Television, the production arm of the agency which represents Forde and also makers of Last Week Tonight With John Oliver for HBO. Their other credits include Catastrophe, Not Going Out, Taskmaster and Russell Howard's Good News

Avalon managing director Jon Thoday, who will be one of the executive producers on the show, said: 'It’s great that UKTV is reacting so swiftly to bring comedy to the current turmoil we face in Great Britain with Matt Forde and Unspun, a programme that fills such an obvious gap in our broadcasting landscape."

The show’s series producer is Robyn O’Brien, whose credits include Live At The Electic; the director is TV Burp's Peter Orton and the producer is Dan Atkinson, the comedian and writer.
