Motherland 'has come to an end'

...reveals star Diane Morgan

Hit comedy Motherland will not be returning, star Diane Morgan has revealed.

But she hinted  a spin-off with Lucy Punch’s character, Amanda, could be in the works.

The comic confirmed the news in an interview with The Times this morning to mark the return of her show Mandy to BBC Two tomorrow.

Asked if Motherland had ended, Morgan replied that it had, adding: ‘ I hate to say it, because I still get women running up to me with prams in the street asking me when it’s coming back.’

And when the subject of the spin-off was raised, she added: ‘Yes. It’ll live on through her. The ladies with the prams will be pleased, hopefully.’

The BBC sitcom – which co-stars Anna Maxwell Martin, Paul Ready, Philippa Dunne and Tanya Moodie – began in 2016 as a one-off pilot. Three series and two  Christmas specials – including the last episode, which aired in 2022  – have been made.

It was created by Sharon Horgan, Holly Walsh, Helen Serafinowicz and her then-husband  Graham Linehan, who stepped away from the show after the first series.

An American remake was piloted last year starring Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s Ellie Kemper . It was originally called  Drop-Off, then Keeping It Together, but the ABC network later passed on developing the show

The BBC declined to comment.
