Original Review:
Kitson is the perfect antidote to the slick, laddish, sex-and-drugs comics that pervade the circuit.
With his wild hair, wilder beard, lisp, stutter, Coke-bottle glasses and appalling dress sense, he's not exactly the epitome of confident style.
But then, that's the root of his unique comedy, that of the hopeless inadequate struggling to get by. He's an untrendy, slightly reactionary, figure baffled and angered by the harsh world, yet too socially inept to do anything about it.
Paradoxically, though, this awkward misfit can take command of the most rowdy of audiences, unleashing a relentless stream of acid put-downs and demonstrating an unequalled mastery of swearing.
That these two sides of this personality - the delicate, sensitive soul and the aggressive destroyer of hecklers - so effortlessly coexist is testament to Kitson's innate comic ability, using arrogance, tempered with self-deprecation, as a common theme.
In what proportion you see the uncomfortable outsider or the formidable ringmaster depends on the night, for Kitson knows how to read a room - always willing to go with the moment, mixing his routines with inspired riffing to best fit the atmosphere.
In short, a natural born comic.

I'm a big fan of Kitson and fell in love with his Gregory Church show which had the right mix of humour, pathos and emotion and was a compelling tale. I saw "After the beginning. before the end' last night in Harrogate and came away slightly disappointed. Interesting, funny but ultimtely a self-help session masquerading as a theatrically monologue abou life and experience. He's quite arrogant and contemptuous as well at times, secretly I suspect he's lonely and wants a family and a normal life. Good but not great.
James Evans - 21/05/2013
Saw Kiston last night in Bristol. Brilliant as always. I don't understand how you can write such a beautifully structured performance piece so heavily laden with comedic material. Incredible.
Ben - 18/02/2013
David, some of the best shows I ever saw were Ken Campbell's monologues. Although he was a largely known as a comedic actor, hugely funny in places and superbly executed, they weren't really anything like stand-up and I wouldn't criticise them for that. Kitson's story shows have elements of humour but are more of a dramatic performance. 'd say that someone turning up in the expectation of a stand-up show might be disappointed if they weren't a fan of the theatre. It doesn't necessarily make the shows pretentious or inferior. Just different.

The Peter Kay of the middle class.

Liked him as a stand up but his recent shows are pretentious, self important and not especially funny. Overrated.
Farmersjuice - 14/01/2013
Go and see him... If anyone was born to do this it was him. Great to see how his work develops before your eyes.

Seen him more often than some family members. Never fail to be moved, cheered and touched.
Neill Aitken - 13/01/2012
Saw Daniel at the National Theatre just before Xmas, what an amazing show, brilliant, not a normal stand-up routine, a fantastic, beautiful story.
James Evans - 22/05/2011
Saw Gregory Church show last night in Bristol. Daniel was excellent and it is beautifully written. I can see him going down the Alan Bennett route soon. I really hope he carried on doing stand-up a while longer though. The audience interaction before the show illustrates how wonderful he is in that medium. A natural funny man.
zack - 08/05/2011
Think kitson is a genius but is going the way of tony slattery - that we (the audience) are not worthy of his material, showed itself in his attack of two punters last night in Durham . Great show, but enjoy him while you can before he withdraws from public shows..
M Pet - 17/03/2011
There are funny people and there are Geniuses. Daniel Kitson is a genius I promise you.
Ted Cole - 15/06/2010
Saw Daniel MCing at the Bums on Seats charity event on 14th June. Never seen him before - he was head and shoulders above anyone else, and most of it was adlibbed while talking to members of the audience. One of the naturally funniest comedians I've seen in a long time. I've seen a few, yet somehow managed to avoid seeing this giant of the circuit - I'll be making up for lost time I can assure you.
Matt Gander - 25/05/2010
Saw Daniel Kitson last night in Brighton where he did the 66a Church Road set. Third time I have commented on him but he really is the most amazing wordsmith and funny man you are ever likely to see. The story about being in love with the house he lived in in Crystal Palace is a wonderful tale delicately told by the most eloquent comic you are ever likely to see. His observations of builders are absolutely spot on and one we can all relate to. Also love the fact that he doesn't milk the fans financially. last nights show was £12 which is un heard of for someone that is as talented as this man. Consistently brilliant in whichever format he wants to show be it stand-up or storytelling. Genius
zack - 05/05/2010
Went to see Daniel's (newish) show last night 66a Church Road. Loved it . Touching, heartfelt, endearing and funny, a true poet and thinker. His use of the English language is unparalleled and to speak on stage for a full 90mins without break was a masterclass . Everyone was engrossed and hooked as his tale of love for his house unfolded. The memories described were wonderfully descritpive and all-enveloping . This is a man at the top of his game. Saw him do stand-up in the same Durham venue last year and he is very very funny and likeable and supremely talented . Imaginative, innovative... there are not enough superlatives to describe this man
Dale - 17/11/2009
Saw Mr. Kitson last night and he was simply brilliant! My cheeks are still hurting from laughing so much and there's still a little lump in my throat from such a beautifully told story. I'm only sorry that I had to wait so long since the last time I saw him. Hopefully he will not leave it so long before coming to Nottingham again.
Sean Prower - 07/11/2009
I cannot emphasise enough how utterly brilliant and exceptionally wonderfully great this man is. Daniel Kitson is constantly superb from start to finish. Fairly priced tickets and his set ran for roughly two straight hours. No break, no support act, just two hours of perfect Kitson comedy. Rather than seeing a comic that might make you smile or giggle, Kitson literally left the crowd in fits of continuous laughter. I'm not writing this to sell the show more but people were wiping tears from their eyes they were crying so much and for a comedian there cannot be any greater response. People rocked in their seats and struggled to catch their breath the laughs came so quickly. One gift to Kitson's comedy is that it isn't just gag after gag. He leaves the audience with a moral to his story as his shows are based on one big moment in his life and how things have happened to him and how these things affect us all in the real world. In between jokes he'll give poignant little speeches based on emotions and actions and how everything is part of reality. Rather than live life to the full, just enjoy what you want and do what makes you happy (within reason and the law) and if you can have a sit down while doing so, result. If you've never heard of him, go his website or itunes and get his 2004 and 2005 shows as podcasts for free. He too plays small theatres which is a bonus. Large arena shows ruin comedy. The more intimate the venue, the more comfortable the setting, the more local the crowd and the more comfortable the seating. He will never do arenas. If he were ever as big a name as Lee Evans or Bill Bailey (as good they are), be assured he would never play a big show. Kitson keeps himself quiet and as such does not print tour leaflets. You have to sign up to his newsletters, get alerts here or regularly check your local theatre websites for upcoming dates. Forget Christmas DVD sellers and arena sell outs, Daniel Kitson is without any doubt the best stand up on the circuit and leaves everyone else standing, sitting, in the dust etc. He is just too good. Just see him if you can and love it for what it is. A five star, 100% funnyman who isn't afraid to say what he thinks. And what he thinks of is comedy gold.
James Evans - 03/11/2009
I realise if those goes up I will have two comments in a row, but this is about a different gig. We saw Daniel in Cardiff last night and its going to be hard to watch any other comedian again. He was funny, warm and philosophical. His show is an all embracing display of comedic brilliance with not one person excluded from its warmth. You can feel a spark in the air that you are watching something and someone special. I can understand Stewart Lee's comments that Kitson comes as close to stand-up perfection as is possible.
James Evans - 30/09/2009
We saw Kitson at the last of the 3 midnight story telling gigs he did in Regents Park Open Air Theatre. It was a bit nippy by 1am in the middle of a park, but it was well worth it. A touching, funny and warm story told by one of the few real storytellers left in our culture. Going to see him do stand-up too in Cardiff november time. Can't wait!
Phil Greenwood - 26/05/2009
I saw Daniel Kitson live at Union Chapel, Islington, recently where he demonstrated why he is so superior to the average stand up. You know when you’ve witnessed great comedy, I left this gig inspired by a thoughtful and consistently funny set, unlike the often slick circuit professionals who have perfected impressing stag do drunks. Kitson stands above the contemporaries who lazily shock to get a laugh, or coldy pick apart vulnerable targets. There is no such bad aftertaste when Kitson warmly weaves one of his stories, during which his observations on life are inventively hilarious, accurate and perceptive. I watch a lot of comedy and Kitson’s stimulating set represented a man with an overflow of good ideas, well crafted material and hilarious delivery by a highly likeable multi-faceted character. I could try to recite the highlights which included a routine on driving instructor catchphrases and other material which he admitted was still in construction, but this was all the more funny in his style which flipped from self-deprecating to supremely confident. You really have to see him live though… A legend at work!
Darren Smith, Liverpool - 04/08/2008
I had read very many great things about the elusive Mr Kitson, all flattering I might add, and I was genuinely excited to have finally caught up with him. e were not to be disappointed. The show was a super display of Intricate structure, interwoven with a golden thread of story-telling, warmth and humility. Sound glitches and ensuing 'technical banter' (which strangely added to the overall conviviality of the event) aside, we left the Royal Exchange Theatre to a man swathed in feelings of both enchantment and optimism that one day, our paths will cross once more with those of this great modern day Bard. You are a first rate wordsmith Mr Kitson, and we salute you!
Matt Gander - 28/05/2008
Starting to look like the Daniel Kitson Appreciation Society (See my previous comment) Saw the great man again in Brighton on 25th May. Two hours of pure original comic genius. The story that runs through the set really makes you think but you don't stop laughing throughout. A wonderful use of pathos. I doubt if there is a better comic around. Absolutely awesome.
Adam Montgomery - 04/09/2007
Simply the greatest comedian around. Effortless, peerless. He can also almost play the drums.
Peter Headen - 22/08/2007
Finally saw the It's tThe Fireworks Talking at Edinburgh last night and if you're still up there then try get a ticket to see it, by fair means or foul ( It sold out straight away but you may get lucky with returns, or from lovely folk outside who had spares, as we did) By far and away the best stand up show I've seen - a beautifully written, cerebral and bittersweet story of fireworks, the moments that stay with us forever as we hurtle along to oblivion sat on the rubbish lump of rock that is earth, the awkwardness of telling your parents you love them, and taking pictures of your own cock on your mobile. Pretty much a perfect show.
Roger Morgan - 08/06/2007
This guy is just pure class. Makes it all look so simple, but has a vocabulary and powers of description that few can match. Had the room spellbound for the full two hours with his seemingly rambling but brilliantly written act. He's not a gag man as such, but a big laugh is never more than a few seconds away. Brilliantly combines the self-depreciating with ironic arrogance. A true genius.
Matt Gander - 01/03/2007
Went to see Mr Kitson in Brighton on February 27, and having only seen him in a "Best of" at the Fringe and in Pheonix Nights was not sure what to expect. First half started slow but got into his stride by the end of the 25-30 minutes. The second half of the show was absolutely brilliant. The gags are delivered brilliantly but also the stories that tie the act together are very well crafted. This is one of the best shows I have seen and would recommend any and everyone to go and see him. It is an often used word but it was verging on the genius
Miss Flea - 07/11/2006
Wow! I was at the first preview of C-90 as well and have rarely laughed so much. After that, would not have missed seeing the show itself at The Fringe. Completely different to the unplanned hilarious mess of chatty anecdotes we were treated to in London, but just as funny. His story shows are so original, a fantastic writer and a very funny guy. The man's a genius!
Albert Simmons - 10/10/2006
I saw Daniel last night at The Pavillion Theatre in Brighton as part of the Brighton Comedy Festival. Although he was only doing a "workings out" show rather than a polished act he managed to keep the laughter flowing all night. He had his notebook and pen with him but rather than conceal it he involved the audience in the experience as he took us through his new and unpolished material. He was absolutely brilliant as ever - this man is a comedy genius and make no mistake about it. In staying well away from the tiresome path of route one observational comedy he enlightens as he entertains. He also comes across as an extremely nice chap - the sort women want to hug and men want to have a pint and a laugh with. He deserves a bigger stage and if he wants it I'm sure it's his for the taking.
Scott - 09/08/2006
Saw him MCing his show at the Stand at the Fringe. Very very funny. I love the guy and really have trouble explaining why, so I'll stop
Thomas - 30/07/2006
Looked effortless but very professional.
Derek Smith - 19/07/2006
Maybe it's me, but looking a loser and talking like a loser for comedy effect just doesn't cut it. No one in the audience believes in the character (he's no Coogan/Paul Calf) and most see it as a way to serve up cheap and easy gags, that rather if Mr. Kitson has the gall to do the routine sans 'props'. He will of course not does this as without his 'disguise' there are no jokes
Andy Bean - 09/07/2006
Saw Kitson do his first preview of 'C-90' at 3pm on a Saturday afternoon - only around 15 minutes of prepared material, plus his 'workings out', but it all sounds very intriguing and I look forward to seeing the finished work in Edinburgh. The rest of the time was taken up with chatter and anecdotes, and - you can't analyse funny, it is or it ain't, and Kitson simply is. Genius.
Kristen - 30/06/2006
I saw Daniel Kitson in New York, and he made three ladies cry. Because they were so touched by his stories. The people here regard him as a comic shaman, and long for his return.
Drewett - 31/05/2006
Saw him at the Albany in London on 29th. Brilliant night. Even though he didn't have the perfect start in the first half, more than made up for it in the second reading out his stories, could have sat and listened for hours.
Iain - 30/05/2006
I was very disappointed. He was over-long, painful and pointless; anything but funny.
Gregg Ainsworth - 02/05/2006
Saw him at the Melbourne Comedy Festival on Sunday. I've seen nothing like it and nothing as intelligent since Steven Wright. It's intellectual, academic, literary and even pompous without being remotely pretentious somehow. And seriously funny and thought provoking
Damien Lee - 16/04/2006
I saw a bunch of comedians at the Melbourne Comedy Festival this yearand Daniel Kitson was by far the funniest. He MCed an after party show at the Hi-Fi bar. I laughed so hard I think a little wee came out. Best comedian I have ever seen
Tom Crosby - 22/03/2006
I saw the previously mentioned spider gig in Hull. Bloody good if you ask me, I think he used a plant in the audience, which he something he frankly souldn't need to do. I think he's very much his own man and his comedy is better for it. I thought the bit were he picked up the spider walked out of the theatre and set it free on the grass was inspired whimsical genius.
Violet - 07/03/2006
Saw Kitson last night at the Adelaide Fringe Fest 2006. What an amazing comic.A s always his show was engaging, intelligent, quirky, original,h onest and bloody hilarious. His presence on stage is like a breath of fresh air. The world needs comics like Daniel in it. A must see..
Chris - 06/03/2006
Saw the teetotal Daniel Kitson at the Battersea Arts Centre on Saturday. He is not a comedian to suit everyone. The people I went with found him funny. I sat and wondered how on earth someone could class pub philosophies as humour. When drunk you might think his verbose musings to be intelligent, amusing and thought provoking. Sober, they are the ramblings of an indecisive sociopath who pays the members of his audience he doesn't like to leave. I didn't have the heart to humiliate him by taking his money and leaving. But I wanted to.
Kat - 03/03/2006
I saw him in Hull and his 'routine' was painfully bad. Half the show was him talking (in particularly unamusing fashion) to a spider that had crawled across the stage. The highlight of the evening was when he went off at the interval and left Ben Folds Five playing through his IPod on the mic (and I detest BFF!). Truly awful, lacking in talent and material from what I witnessed.
Benjamin Cox - 01/03/2006
We saw Dan in Battersea. He was engaging, funny and clever. We smiled, laughed and loved for an hour and a half. So enjoyable on many levels
Penelope - 26/02/2006
Saw DK at Lincoln last night. He reached comic excellence in the second half. Must have read through his notes in the interval. I can relate to his 'cunt' philosophy, as I left the venue I heard a fellow audience member say 'that would have been better if I'd have drank more beer'. There really is no hope for humanity! The only hope is the accurate and eloquent observations of Daniel Kitson. My only slight annoyance was his impression that everyone who lives outside of London have never lived in London themselves...some people have and know how shit it is.
Nick - 21/02/2006
Kitson just gets funnier and funnier. My favourite comedian, although i bet that really doesn't bother him.
Jenny - 20/02/2006
My face still aches from Friday night. Thanks Daniel Kitson.
Chris - 20/02/2006
Saw Daniel lastnight in Nottingham, was A* performance. Constantly laughing, the only complaint I do have to make is that my ribs hurt still. Small price to pay for a night of pure comic genius.
Joe - 18/02/2006
Saw him back in 2001 and he was the funniest comic I saw that year. Absolutely brilliant, do not miss the chance if you get it.
Doug - 17/02/2006
His demolition of the kind of person who reads Nuts had me helpless. I will be getting a red balloon on a string this weekend.
Duncan - 07/02/2006
Saw him last night in Leeds. Third time I've seen him and he is really on form. Destroyed a heckler with obvious relish and then worried a bit about it later! Spent time developing some ideas which all coalesced to form a very astute and funny world view. He may well detest 99% of Britons but it is very difficult to detest him back
Liam - 07/02/2006
Hilarious from start to finish. Someone was foolish enough to heckle and Mr.Kitson obliterated them.
Nodwin - 27/01/2006
His Resonance FM show makes for wonderful late-night listening. He demonstrates, even more than onstage, his ability to generate humour out of just about anything...and he has great taste in music (except for that dreadfully twee 'Diane Keaton' song)
Paul & Sarah - 20/01/2006
There is no one to compare him against. Original and funny, but we don't know why. Drawing us into his lovely, cutting and sometimes uncomfortable world he toys with his seemingly rambling stories of making the mundane funny. We even loved him calling us in Kent racists. He made us set our alarms to go off at 10.20 so he could catch the last train back to London. Hope you made your train Dan!
Luvie - 31/12/2005
If you don't you laugh your socks off my advice would be to seriously consider a humour transplant
John - 01/12/2005
Saw Kitson at Newcastle Durex festival and Edinburgh in 2004. In Newcastlehe managed to create a whole impromptu performance around ordering drinks for the eighty odd people in the auditorium, lasting at least an hour and one of the funniest things I've ever seen in my life. At Edinburgh, clearly a bit uncertain of direction after recieving all those awards and not quite becoming massive, he was merely briliant. I truly believe people like Kitson could save the world, if they could be arsed, and if enough people could be arsed to listen. But that's probably the last thing he would want to hear...
Bobo - 01/12/2005
I've never laffed so hard at a comedy gag before. Daniel Kitson is god.
Darren Richman - 05/11/2005
The best comedian in the country. Funny, clever, profound and right about everything.
Keith B - 12/10/2005
Brighton Festival. Wonderful, simply wonderful. The most laughter I've ever done in 2hrs, 8mins and 15secs.
Gav - 02/10/2005
I've seen him numerous times at his low-key warm-up shows. He can perform a set of fantastic new materal one night and then practically discard the lot to perform a fresh set the following night. He throws away material that 99% of stand-ups would kill for. Other reviews have mentioned how bored and angry he often appears. And it is true that he regularly seems frustrated at the whole business of performing in front of drunken fools wanting the next cock joke. You must go and see him before he gets fed up with the whole business of performing. Unspeakably brilliant.
Andrew Asprilla - 12/09/2005
Apparently all men who wear beards are great. First Jesus, then Santa Claus and now this man
Andy - 05/09/2005
Having seen him on television and after being recommended to see him I wish I hadn't bothered. It was the worst comedy gig I've been to and that is saying something. It was totally under prepared and when the audience did not laugh at his awful material he resorted to asking us what we did for a living and trying to make a joke out of that. I did really hope it would improve but it just got more and more uncomfortable for Kitson and the crowd. Mercifully he put us out of our misery after forty five minutes. Some people left after ten minutes. I wish I had joined them.
Tom Crosy - 25/07/2005
I've seen him twice in Hull and hes been bloody good both times. He somehow remains extremely lovable while holding almost total contempt for the audience. One of a kind, catch him if you can.
Ali - 22/07/2005
Saw him last night at the Riverside and he was awsome. Did a 1 hour 45 min set which flew past and I could have listened to another hour or two.
Happy Punter - 16/07/2005
The perfect anti-hero. Northern comedy at its best. Well done Kitson- you hairy peach.
Tim - 01/07/2005
What has happened?! Saw this once fantastic comedian in the worst show I have ever been to. In the early days, he was pant wettingly funny. Now, he comes across as arrogant, frustratingly dis-organised and obviously having no interest in the audience. Completely boring. Example of how success can ruin a man. Shame
Ryan - 23/05/2005
I know it sounds like hyperbole but Dan is the standard by which all other comedians should be judged. If you don't believe this go and see him, I defy you not to be converted. Extraordinary and so much more than just comedy.
Anthony Jones - 06/03/2005
Daniel is the comedy king. pure and simple! Long live the king.
Derren - 08/02/2005
Odd, engaging and very, very funny. It's a shame he shuns TV work.
Mike Wakefild - 07/02/2005
Saw Daniel Kitson at the Dancehouse on Saturday and he was as funny and charming as when I last saw him there in 2003. It is life-affirming to see a comedian who rips the shit out of idiotic, bullying lad culture, whilst not being afraid to expose his own weaknesses and fears - and who swears like a particularly inventive trooper.
Greendogg - 06/02/2005
I have to give a mixewd review. It was a decent show - butone too many empty spaces - his attention wanders and so did mine. Still, there is quality and I'd certainly recommend going to see him. Value for money entertainment.
Jonny - 25/01/2005
I find it hard to believe that a better comedian exists. Hard to fault
Spong - 11/01/2005
Looked lovely in his pants at Tattershall Castle last night.
Bob - 04/01/2005
The thing about not having "a modicum of respect for the paying public" is very funny - up to a point but I think Kitson is probably pushing it a bit too far now. He's back doing shows after a four month break but doesn't seem refreshed - rather tired and somewhat lazy. Plods reluctantly through some old bits with obvious boredom to please the crowd while newer material not well prepared.
