Several people in the audience who were gay found Peter's mincing stereotype offensive and one-dimensional. You would no longer expect people to black up and sing Mammy, afterall. His singing voice was good, albeit in the Joe Longthorne tradition, and his material was much less promising. References to "Feeling queer", "Uphill gardening" and "Faggot Packing" littered the act throughout. Most of these type of jokes can be sourced in your average Carry On film. So Peter Carried on camping but with little charm, a great deal of dirt and little to stimulate the punter looking for more than just superficial gay cabaret blether.
